QUEENS, N.Y. (March 9, 2020) – After claiming its second consecutive win at DaSilva Memorial Field this season with a 16-9 win over Siena, the Red Storm will take on local rival Hofstra in its third contest at home this season.
Coverage of Tuesday's game at DaSilva Memorial Field will be broadcasted live on ESPN3 with Ralph Bednarczyk on the call.
Both teams are in search of their fourth victory. St. John's comes into Saturday's matchup having won three of its last four contests while the Pride has lost three of its last four tilts after starting the season 2-0. Hofstra's three losses have come from BIG EAST foe Villanova, Stony Brook, and Ohio State.
Tuesday's showdown will mark the seventh game of the season for the Pride, and the third away from James M. Shuart Stadium. Hofstra, which has wins over Wagner, Michigan, and LIU and losses to BIG EAST foe Villanova, Stony Brook, and Ohio State, is coming off a 12-10 defeat to the Buckeyes in Columbus last Saturday.
The Pride is led in scoring by junior Ryan Tierney with 17 goals and 11 assists while James Philbin has seven goals and four assists. He has also coached 14 student-athletes who have earned All-America honors and 65 who have earned all-conference accolades.
Last year, Hofstra opened the season with a win over No. 13 Lehigh, but key injuries and inexperience led to a 5-9 season. Three student-athletes earned All-CAA honors and two seniors were named to the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game.
Hofstra and St. John's will be meeting for the 22nd time on Tuesday. The Pride hold 16-5 series lead over the Johnnies.
The two teams have met each year over the past 10 seasons, with the Red Storm only winning three games in that stretch.
The last time these two teams met at DaSilva Memorial Field, Colin Duffy scored the game-winning goal with 3.7 seconds remaining to break an 8-8 deadlock over No. 19/18 Pride on March 24, 2018. It was the Red Storm's first win over a ranked opponent in almost five years.
St. John's senior midfielder Mike Madsen has been named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week for the second time this season following a career-best, six goals in the Red Storm's 16-9 triumph over Siena at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the overtime loss at Stony Brook, the senior scored five goals which eclipsed his previous career-high set on March 23 of last season in a 15-13 win over UMass Lowell. Four of five of Madsen's goals came in the second half, including the game-tying tally with 2:08 remaining in the fourth period.
Madsen matched his new career-high against Hartford, leading the Red Storm to its first win of the season with his five goals. The Locust Valley, N.Y., native scored two of his five tallies in the fourth quarter to catapult the Johnnies over the Hawks, 13-11.
Madsen's third goal in the win over LIU marked his 100th career point, becoming only the 12th Johnnie in program history to reach the plateau.
Madsen's twin brother, Joe, has been just as impressive this season, tallying 15 goals and dishing nine assists so far this season. Joe Madsen enters this week's matchup with the ninth-longest point-scoring streak in the nation, having registered a point in 39 consecutive contests, dating back to April 4, 2017. In that 39-game stretch, the Locust Valley, N.Y., native has scored 86 goals and recorded 20 assists.
Joe Madsen set a new career-high with four assists and tied his career-high point total, adding three goals in St. John's loss to Michigan. Madsen is one goal away from reaching 100 career tallies. He will become only the fourth player in program history to reach the plateau.
As a team, St. John's has been top of the conference in numerous statistical categories through the first six weeks of the season.
Through four games, the Red Storm have amassed a conference-leading 107 faceoff wins, 15 man-up goals, and .652 man-up scoring percentage. St. John's has boasted one of the most potent man-up offenses in the nation, firing 15 goals (2nd in NCAA) in 23 tries.
