Chen finishes in a tie for second place
The St. John's men's golf team wrapped up its fall season on a high note, as the Johnnies were named Co-Champions of the Nassau Invitational following the cancellation of Tuesday's final round due to rain in the forecast.
The Red Storm shot a two-round 595 on Monday to tie host school LIU for the top spot. The tournament championship is the Red Storm's second of the fall slate.
"It's nice to finish the fall season with a win," said head men's golf coach Mal Galletta. "Even though some of the guys didn't have their best games, they showed some grit and got the win."
Freshman Peicheng Chen led the way for the Red Storm, signing off on a 71 and 73 to finish in a tie for second. Chen tied teammate Jack Simon with a team-high five birdies over 36-holes.
Senior Tyler Gerbavsits also finished inside the top-15 for the Johnnies, turning in a 75 and 74 on the afternoon.
The Red Storm trio of Simon, Doug Beney and Gage Wolfle, who was competing as an individual, all three carded a 151 on the day to finish in a tie for 17th place. Wolfle's first-round effort was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole.
Freshman Thomas Stafford, who also played as an individual, shot a first-round 81 before finishing with a 73 over the final 18 holes to jump nine spots on the leaderboard and place 24th overall in the standings.
Joseph Busiello rounded out scoring for the Red Storm, shooting an 81 and 79, respectively.
