The Johnnies and the Musketeers will kick off at 7 p.m.
Looking to remain unbeaten during BIG EAST action, the St. John's women's soccer team travels to Cincinnati on Thursday for a 7 p.m. meeting with Xavier on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
The Red Storm (6-2-2, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) enters its matchup with the Musketeers after playing Butler to a 1-1 draw last Thursday. St. John's lone goal of the contest came off the foot of the league's leading scorer Zsani Kajan. The Budapest, Hungary, native recorded her 11th goal of the season in the 15th minute off a long pass from junior Isabelle Aviza. Sophomore forward Nicole Gordon also picked up an assist on Kajan's score to tie Jessica Garziano for a team-high five helpers on the year.
Kajan's 11 goals this season tie for a career-high, as she registered 11 scores in 2018 and again in 2019. With her tally against the Bulldogs, she bumped her overall goal total to 39, and is just one shy of tying Adriana Viola for second on the Red Storm's all-time scoring list. As a result of her goal against the Bulldogs, Kajan landed a spot on the league's weekly honor roll on Monday.
All six of the Red Storm's wins this year have come via the shutout. Naya Lipkens, a redshirt junior from Bloomfield, Conn., has started every game between the pipes for the Johnnies this season, recording five clean sheets and one shared shutout. During league action, Lipkens is dominating in net, as she leads the conference in both goals against average (0.31) and save percentage (.952).
As a team, the Red Storm has allowed its opponents just one goal during BIG EAST action, the fewest of any team in the league. The Johnnies are boasting a 0.31 goals against average to sit atop the standings in conference action.
Xavier comes into Thursday's match with a record of 10-1-1, suffering its lone loss off the season against BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Sept. 26. Since then, the Musketeers have recorded back-to-back shutout victories against Villanova on Sept. 30 and Creighton on Oct. 3.
Reigning BIG EAST Defender of the Week Hayley Jakovich played the full time in both of Xavier's wins last week. The senior from Eureka, Mo., scored the game-winning goal against Creighton on Sunday, marking her first of the season. Chloe Netzel, a product of St. Louis, leads the squad offensively this year with four goals, including a pair of game-winners.
Olivia Jenkins has served as the Musketeers' primary goalkeeper this season, boasting a 0.57 goals against average and a 0.811 save percentage. Last week, Jenkins recorded clean sheets over Villanova and at Creighton to earn a spot on the league's weekly honor roll.
Thursday will mark the eighth all-time meeting between the Johnnies and the Musketeers. The Red Storm leads the series, 6-1, including a perfect 3-0 mark during road contests. This matchup between the two BIG EAST teams will be the first since the 2019 campaign.
Following Thursday's contest, St. John's returns home to Queens for a meeting with Georgetown on Oct. 10. The two programs are slated to kick off at 1 p.m.
