The Red Storm earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament on Monday for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2015. St. John's was one of five BIG EAST programs to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament field, as Georgetown, Xavier, Providence and Butler will all compete for a chance at the title. This marks the first time since 2010 that the league has seen five different teams earn bids.
Prior to Monday's selection show, the Red Storm compiled a record of 12-6-2, including a 6-3-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Johnnies' 12 wins were the highest such total for the team since 2015 when the squad recorded a program-best 15 victories and were named the conference regular season champions.
The Red Storm has been led offensively this season by BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Zsani Kajan. The Budapest, Hungary, native has tallied 17 goals through 20 games to lead the BIG EAST and sit second overall in the country. With a conference-high 39 points this season, Kajan bumped her career total to 100. The Budapest, Hungary, native is just the second Johnnie in program history to eclipse the 100-point plateau, as she joins the Red Storm's all-time leading scorer Rachel Daly, who capped off her career with 111 points.
Brown enters Sunday's contest with a record of 12-3, including a perfect 7-0 mark in Ivy League action. The Bears are coming off their second-straight conference title and the team's 14th in program history.
Brown's offense is spearheaded by junior Brittany Raphino, who leads the conference in both goals (11) and points (28). She also sits inside the top five in the Ivy League for game-winning goals (4), assists (6) and shots on goal (23). For her efforts this season, Raphino was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year on Nov. 10. Junior Kayla Duran also earned a major award from the conference, taking home Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. Additionally, head coach Kia McNeil was named Coach of the Year for the second-straight season.
The Johnnies and the Bears will meet for the fifth time in program history with Brown leading the series, 3-1. The Red Storm's lone win over the Bears came in 2013, as Daly recorded the second hat trick of her career to lift the Johnnies to a 4-0 victory at Belson Stadium.
