The Red Storm will compete in its home indoor meet for the first time in two seasons
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will look to get its indoor season off to a strong start on Saturday when it hosts the Bill Ward Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.
The Red Storm will welcome familiar competition to its annual home indoor meet, including BIG EAST rival Georgetown and local foes Columbia, Fordham, Manhattan and Iona among others. The season-opener will feature 525 student-athletes.
The Johnnies have enjoyed great recent success at the Bill Ward Invitational. In 2019, the Red Storm earned 23 finishes inside the top-three across all events and took home five first-place finishes in 2018.
Leah Anderson returns for her final season as a Johnnie to lead the way for the sprinters. The graduate student out of Mount Vernon, N.Y., finished the 2021 outdoor season with several BIG EAST championships and the conference's Most Outstanding Performer honor. On Saturday, Anderson is set to compete in the 60-meter and 500-meter races. BIG EAST champion Avon Samuels will also compete in the 60-meter and 500-meter competitions alongside Anderson.
Fellow sprinters Brooklyn Chestnut and Onassha Rogers will return to the track at Ocean Breeze, running in the 60-meter and 200-meter events. Chestnut and Rogers were a part of the 4x100-meter relay team that captured the BIG EAST title last May.
Coming off a solid cross country season, junior Claire Cushing is set to make her 2021 track debut. The junior out of Ontario led the Red Storm during the fall with several top-five finishes and one individual win at the Fordham Fiasco in September. Cushing will start the indoor season by running in the 3,000-meter race. She will also look to be an integral part of the 4x800-meter relay team.
Senior Amanda Belgrave and graduate student Antonia Frazier will look to start the indoor campaign strong in the long jump and high jump, respectively. Sophomore Meghan Ladd will lead the way in the pole vault event for the Red Storm after posting several solid results in the spring, including a person best by clearing 3.23 meters at the Army Twilight Meet in April.
