Anderson Leads The Way at Bill Ward Invitational

The Red Storm takes home 13 top-three finishes
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team concluded a successful day at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex with 13 top-three finishes across 15 events.
Leah Anderson made the most of her two competitions on Saturday. The graduate student etched her name in program history in both the 60-meter and 500-meter races. Anderson tied Rikka Lovely for the third best time in St. John's history in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.48. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native also passed Kim Thomas for the fourth best time in program history in the 500-meter dash, finishing with a time of 1:12.49. Senior Skyy Diop closely followed Anderson in the 500-meter race, finishing in second with a strong time of 1:13.14.
Onassha Rogers and Brooklyn Chestnut finished just behind Anderson in the 60-meter dash. Rogers and Chestnut finished in second and third place, respectively, with times of 7.52 and 7.64. The pair also secured top-three finishes in the 200-meter dash. Chestnut captured second place with a time of 25.33. Rogers finished close behind in third and a time of 25.56.
Elsewhere, Claire Cushing continued her strong 2021 season by winning the 3,000-meter run by more than seven seconds. The junior out of Ontario crossed the finish line with 10:01.92 on the clock, good for sixth on the all-time program list in that event during the indoor season. Graduate student Mia Forster finished fourth with a time of 10:39.34 in the event in her St. John's track debut.
The team of Cushing, Katherine Bruno, Jenna D'Onofrio, and Zamira Ysaac put on a strong showing in the 4x800-meter relay race. The quartet finished in second behind Columbia with a time of 10:01.82.
Amanda Belgrave led the way in the jump events; the senior took home second in the long jump with a distance of 5.33 meters. Rushellee Jones finished in second in the high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters.
Lasma Padedze earned third place in shot put. Padedze reached a distance of 13.29 meters on her third attempt which gave the Red Storm another top-three finish at the Bill Ward Inviational.
St. John's will return to action in 2022 when it returns to Ocean Breeze to take part in the Penn Select on Saturday, Jan. 15.
