Red Storm hurlers scatter three hits in season opener
Three St. John's pitchers combined to surrender three hits and no earned runs on Friday afternoon, as the Red Storm kicked off the 2021 season with a 2-1 win over UMass Lowell at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Nick Mondak was magnificent in his 2021 debut, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out seven in 6.0 scoreless innings of work. The Southpaw from Watertown, Conn., threw 86 pitches, 56 of which were strikes.
Sonny Fauci relieved Mondak for the seventh and struck out three in 2.0 innings of one-run ball. His one run was unearned, as the redshirt freshman maintained an impressive streak of no earned tallies in 14.2 frames as a collegiate pitcher.
Ethan Routzahn entered for the ninth and needed just five pitches to record his first save of the season.
David Glancy and Justin Folz picked up two hits apiece on the afternoon. Glancy, who hit .423 in a shortened freshman season a year ago, went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Folz, who hit .294 in 2020, also singled twice.
Graduate student Mitchell Henshaw drove in the Red Storm's other run.
Jake Lazzaro, one of three Johnnies alongside Fauci and Glancy to earn Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-America honors in 2020, walked twice in the leadoff spot for St. John's.
The Johnnies opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Glancy drew a four-pitch leadoff walk before moving to second on a Folz single and taking third on a fielding error by the centerfielder. Henshaw then chopped a grounder to the left side, scoring Glancy and putting the Red Storm ahead 1-0 after four.
After Mondak worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, the Red Storm added another in the home half of the frame. Ryan Hogan was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before advancing into scoring position with a Lazzaro walk two batters later. Following the inning's second out, Glancy ripped an RBI single into left, scoring Hogan from second and pushing the Red Storm lead to a pair.
UMass Lowell scored its lone run of the game with one out in the eighth, but a strike 'em out-throw 'em out double play ended any thoughts of a River Hawk rally in the frame.
The Red Storm and the River Hawks will resume their series tomorrow afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
