Red Storm to play its first-ever February game in Queens
The St. John's baseball team will begin its 2021 season on Friday afternoon, welcoming UMass Lowell to Jack Kaiser Stadium for the opener of a three-game set. All three games against the River Hawks will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
In accordance with public health guidelines set forth by New York City, New York State and St. John's University, fans will not be permitted to attend games at Jack Kaiser Stadium until further notice.
St. John's will host a game in Queens during the month of February for the first time in program history. Since Jack Kaiser Stadium was opened as The Ballpark at St. John's in 2001, the Johnnies have not hosted a home opener earlier than March 11.
Last season, the Red Storm ended its shortened campaign with back-to-back home wins in Queens, outscoring Saint Peter's and Iona by a combined margin of 30-4 on March 10-11. The Johnnies won the first of those contests against the Peacocks, 21-1, before downing the Gaels, 9-3, in what would be their season finale. Freshman David Glancy put forth an otherworldly pair of efforts in those two games, going 7-for-9 with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. The Neptune, N.J., native drove in all eight of his runs against Saint Peter's, good enough for the highest single-game RBI total by a Johnnie since Paul Karmas knocked in 10 runs against New Orleans in February of 2010.
Glancy and two of his classmates earned Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper at season's end. Jake Lazzaro finished second on the team with a .327 average while recording four three-hit games in just 13 appearances with an at-bat. Sonny Fauci was the lone St. John's pitcher to get through 2020 without surrendering an earned run, holding opponents to a .200 average and striking out nine in 12.2 innings of work.
All three of those promising freshmen return for 2021, as do a slew of other talented players from the 2020 roster. 11 of the 13 Red Storm pitchers that made an appearance last year are back, including the five hurlers who accounted for all 14 of the Johnnies' starts. In his fifth year with the program, Nick Mondak will return to his role as the Red Storm's Friday starter. The Watertown, Conn., native struck out 21 in 21.0 innings of work while walking only 12. Saturday starter Ian Murphy will look to replicate the success of his 2020 season debut, when he struck out nine batters in 5.0 scoreless innings during a drubbing of No. 19 Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Redshirt sophomore Brian Hendry will take the hill on Sunday for his first weekend start as a Johnnie. In his lone start last season against Iona on March 11, Hendry struck out six in 4.0 innings of two-run work.
In the field, St. John's welcomes back eight players who started five or more games last season. In addition to Glancy (.423) and Lazzaro (.327), two others Johnnies hit better than .285. Justin Folz, a switch-hitting third baseman, batted .294 with two homers and a team-leading 12 RBIs. Ryan Hogan, who returns for his fifth year with the Johnnies in 2021, batted .286 with a home run in the series opener at Cal.
UMass Lowell went 4-11 during the shortened 2020 season, taking three of four against Canisius to start the year before losing 10 of its last 11. The River Hawks played quality competition before COVID shut down the season, taking on LSU in a three-game set in Baton Rouge before traveling to Charlottesville for two games with UVA.
Vinnie Martin, a Bergen Catholic product, hit a team-high .447 with a pair of homers and four doubles in 14 starts last season. His former high school teammate, Gerry Siracusa, batted .308 with four multi-hit games.
As a team, the River Hawks hit .244 and reached base at a .359 clip. Opponents hit .293 against UMass Lowell with an OBP of .428.
St. John's and UMass Lowell have met one time in the history of the two programs, a 6-3 win for the Johnnies at a neutral site in Norfolk, Va., on March 18, 2017. The Red Storm, which went on to win 42 games that year, improved to 14-2 with the victory. Freshman Jeff Belge struck struck out seven in 6.0 frames of relief.
In accordance with public health guidelines set forth by New York City, New York State and St. John's University, fans will not be permitted to attend games at Jack Kaiser Stadium until further notice.
