Red Storm had won seven straight to start the season
Following seven straight wins to start the season, the St. John's baseball team suffered its first loss of 2021 on Friday night, falling to Western Carolina, 11-1, at Hennon Stadium.
Nick Mondak fanned eight batters in 5.0 innings of work, but was tagged with his first loss of the season after surrendering four runs with two outs in the fifth. Prior to those runs, the redshirt junior southpaw had thrown 16.2 scoreless innings to start the season.
In the bottom of the third, Jake Lazzaro singled to left with two outs before reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Ryan Hogan smacked a double to the wall in right, scoring Lazzaro from first and giving the Johnnies an early 1-0 lead.
After Mondak retired the first two batters of the WCU fifth, five straight Catamounts (9-4) reached base to bring home four runs. Four of those players got on with a hit, including a pair of two-RBI doubles.
Two innings later, the Catamounts needed just two hits to plate five runs and extend their advantage to eight, 9-1. The Johnnies walked three batters, hit two more and threw four wild pitches in the frame.
West Carolina added two more in the eighth thanks to a two-run shot from Daylan Nanny, pushing the lead to 11-1.
David Glancy and Carson Bartels doubled in the series opener while Vincent Bianchi started and logged a base knock.
The Red Storm and the Catamounts will resume their series on Saturday in Cullowhee. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
