St. John’s Continues Conference Play at Villanova on Sunday

The Red Storm will face off against the Wildcats at 3 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 13, 2021) – Following its loss to No. 11/10 Denver on Saturday, the St. John's lacrosse team will travels to The City of Brotherly Love this Sunday to take on the Villanova Wildcats at 3 p.m.
The contest will be broadcast live on Nova Nation All-Access with live stats available at statbroadcast.com.
St. John's (1-3, 0-3 BIG EAST) will look to jump back in the win column after falling to No. 11/10 Denver, 20-6, last Saturday at DaSilva Memorial Field. Despite the Red Storm's setback against the Pioneers, graduate student Joe Madsen tallied a hat trick while Jonathan Huber and Ryan Schaeffer combined for three goals.
Senior netminder Gavin Catalano earned his first career start for St. John's last week, collecting a game-high 19 saves and one assist. In conference action, Catalano is tied for first in the conference standings alongside Marquette's Gabe Stein with 11.0 saves per game.
The Red Storm currently sits in second in the BIG EAST for saves (14.0) and caused turnovers (9.7) per game.
Villanova (2-1, 2-1 BIG EAST) will host its first home match since losing to Georgetown on Feb. 21. The Wildcats are coming off a 11-8 victory over Providence last Sunday. Seniors Eric Overbay and Keegan Khan led the way for Villanova, posting three goals apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Will Vitton earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors, as he stopped 16 shots between the pipes against the Friars last week. Vitton's 10 saves per game rank fourth in the conference, one spot behind St. John's Brody Agres.
Villanova have been ranked as high as No. 16 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Poll this season. The Wildcats were picked third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll after posting a 4-3 record in 2020. The Wildcats picked up wins against Maryland, Hofstra Delaware and Penn before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the season.
Sunday will mark the 22nd all-time meeting between the two programs with the Wildcats leading the series, 14-7. The Red Storm's last contest with Villanova took place on April 20, 2019, when St. John's fell to the Wildcats, 16-5.
