St. John’s Shines at Fordham Invitational

The Red Storm captured four first place finishes
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 20, 2021) – The St. John's track & field team kicked off its 2021 outdoor season in the Fordham Invitational on Saturday, earning four first-place finishes at Ichan Stadium.
Leah Anderson secured two wins in the 100 and 200 meters, posting times of 11.81 and 24.32. The senior sprinter's 200-meter outdoor mark is the ninth-fastest time in program history and ranks 23rd in the nation this season. Her mark in the 100 meters ranks 22nd in the country.
Avon Samuels also earned two podium spots in both events, finishing second in the 100 meters with a time of 12.25 and third in the 200 meters with a mark of 24.98.
Junior Skyy Diop took first place in the 400 meters after crossing the finish line in 56.38. Esmeralda Reyes rounded out the Red Storm's list of event winners with a top throw of 37.69 meters in the javelin.
Olivia Pantale and Nina D'Amato joined Reyes on the podium in the javelin, finishing in second and third place, respectively.
"We had a great day across all of our events, and it was great to see our full team in action for the first time in over a year," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "We put our athletes on the podium in most events which shows the strength of our team. We congratulate all of our event winners and have much to look forward to in the weeks ahead."
Stephanie Gerland earned a second-place finish in the 5000 meters with a time of 17:44.31 while Zamira Ysaac placed second in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 1:09.04.
Junior Amanda Belgrave earned silver in the triple jump with a distance of 11.08 meters, as Samantha Morillo captured second place in the shot put with a throw of 14.03 meters.
Freshman Meghan Ladd also took second in the pole vault, clearing a mark of 3.19 meters.
St. John's returns to action on April 9-10 at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships. The meet will be held at Icahn Stadium.
