Rams defeat Red Storm, 8-4, in game called after five innings
Queens, N.Y. (March 24, 2021) – The St. John's softball team fell to Fordham, 8-4, in five innings on a soggy Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
The Red Storm (5-8, 2-4 BIG EAST) were looking to mount a comeback on the Rams (11-3), as they nearly cut the lead in half in the fifth inning, but the game was deemed no longer playable after an out was recorded in the top of the sixth.
The bottom of the order was productive on the day for St. John's, as the trio of Amelia Ditolvo, Kamryn Tiumalu and Elyse Morris combined for four hits, three RBIs and a run scored. As a team, the Red Storm recorded six hits on the day compared to Fordham's four, but the biggest disparity between the two teams was the walk differential, as the Johnnies surrendered 12 free passes compared to the Rams six.
Angela Saric got the start for the Red Storm and pitched well through two innings, as she surrendered just one run and her team trailed, 1-0. Most of the Rams' damage, however, came in the third frame as they compiled five runs on three hits, sending 11 batters to the plate and the Johnnies trailed, 6-0, after two and a half innings of play.
St. John's got one back in the third off of Fordham starter Makenzie McGrath, as Gretchen Bowie walked to start the inning and came in on a Peyton Cody infield single to narrow the gap, 6-1. The Red Storm was looking for more, as they sent seven batters to the plate in the inning but left the bases loaded.
Kayla Kmett (3-4), who entered the game in the third inning, worked a perfect fourth while the Johnnies got a runner into scoring position in the frame but couldn't score, as they trailed, 6-1, after four. The Rams tacked on an additional two runs off of five walks in the fifth, extending their lead to 8-1.
The Red Storm had an offensive outburst in the fifth, as the Rams began to run into some walk-related issues of their own. Camryn Steele, Cody and Carolyn Von Werne each worked free passes to open the inning before McGrath, the Fordham starter, was lifted from the game. Ditolvo reached on a fielder's choice which plated a run, followed by a Morris two-RBI double into the right-center field gap to close the deficit, 8-4.
That was as far as the Red Storm would get, however, as after Erin Brown retired the leadoff hitter and walked one in the sixth inning, the game was called as the rainfall at Red Storm Field began to intensify.
Next up on the schedule for St. John's is a weekend series with Providence. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12, followed by a single game on Sunday at noon. All three games will be broadcast from Queens via ESPN3.
