Friday's contest will begin at 12 p.m. before Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 11 a.m. Game one of the twin bill is slated for seven innings while game two is scheduled for nine. Sunday's series finale will have a 12 p.m. first pitch.
Audio broadcasts will be available for games on Friday and Sunday. Live stats for all three games can be found at RedStormSports.com
Prior to this season, St. John's had never played a home game in February and had not kicked off a season in Queens since 1995. Since 1956, the first year under the direction of Head Coach Jack Kaiser and the first year for which home and away designations are marked in the St. John's record book, St. John's has never started a season with seven consecutive home games.
The Red Storm's bats showed flashes of brilliance against UMass Lowell, but it was the arms that anchored St. John's to a season opening sweep last weekend. Over 27 innings, the Red Storm pitching staff surrendered just three earned runs while striking out 33, walking 13 and holding the River Hawks to a .135 team batting average. The Johnnies' Friday and Saturday starters, Nick Mondak and Ian Murphy, combined to strike out 15 and walk two in 12.0 innings of scoreless, three-hit work. Murphy was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after fanning eight and allowing just three batters to reach base in Saturday's win. Ethan Routzahn picked up saves in two of the Red Storm's first three wins, shutting the door in the opener on Friday before sealing the victory and the sweep on Sunday. Routzahn was one of five Red Storm relievers to make at least one appearance and give up no earned runs on opening weekend alongside Sonny Fauci, Nick Guzzi, Geoff Mosseau and Joe Joe Rodriguez.
At the dish, three Red Storm starters hit .450 or better on opening weekend. David Glancy earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after hitting .500 with a pair of home runs and six RBIs. The redshirt freshman from Neptune, N.J., now has four home runs in five career games at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Redshirt junior Justin Folz went 5-for-11 with a pair of doubles and a home run. The third baseman's round tripper, which went back-to-back with Glancy in Saturday's 11-3 win, was an inside-the-parker. Brandon Miller also went 5-for-11 on the weekend thanks to a 4-for-5 effort in Saturday's lopsided victory. The redshirt junior had never registered more than two hits in a game prior to that effort again the River Hawks.
Another Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American from last season, Jake Lazzaro reached base at a .462 clip on opening weekend from the leadoff spot. The Oceanside, N.Y., native recorded just one hit, but walked five times in the team's first three games. Lazzaro also drove in a run and scored twice.
Sacred Heart began the 2021 season by going 1-2 in a three-game set at Stony Brook. The Pioneers were swept in a Friday doubleheader before blanking the Seawolves, 2-0, in the Sunday finale.
In addition to holding Stony Brook scoreless on Sunday, Sacred Heart also limited the Seawolves to just one run in the series opener. As a staff, the Pioneers turned in a 2.74 ERA on opening weekend. Saturday's game one projected starter, Ryan LaMay, allowed three hits and struck out eight in 5.0 scoreless innings to register the team's lone win.
Offensively, the Pioneers hit .118 against Stony Brook. Only one Pioneer, senior infielder Danny Glendon, picked up more than one hit on the weekend.
St. John's and Sacred Heart have met 10 times in the history of the two programs with nine of those contests coming between 1970 and 1976. The lone meeting in the last 40 years was a 10-2 win for the Pioneers on March 29, 2014, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. That loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Red Storm.
St. John's is 8-2 all-time against Sacred Heart.
