David Williams drove in four runs for the Johnnies
Nick Mondak delivered another stellar start on Friday afternoon, tossing 6.0 scoreless frames as the Red Storm cruised to an 8-2 series-opening win against Sacred Heart at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Mondak, who scattered four hits and walked three while fanning five, has now gone 12.0 innings to start the season without surrendering a run. Tyler Roche and Brandyn Cruz threw scoreless innings in relief of Mondak before the Pioneers scored two runs in the ninth.
At the dish, St. John's (4-0) tallied eight runs on 12 hits, led by three-hit performances from David Williams and Ryan Hogan. Williams went 3-for-5 with a two-bagger and three RBIs while Hogan went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a hit-by-pitch.
David Glancy failed to leave the yard for the just the second time in his career at Jack Kaiser Stadium, but still managed to go 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Brandon Miller reached base four times, tallying a pair of singles and walking twice.
Jake Lazzaro and Mitchell Henshaw also singled for the Red Storm on Friday afternoon. Henshaw's base knock brought in a run, as did Justin Folz's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
After Mondak stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the third, the Red Storm broke through in the home half of the inning. Hogan doubled to lead off the frame before Glancy singled and stole second to give St. John's runners on second and third with no out. After Folz lined out to the first baseman, Williams delivered an RBI base knock to center, scoring Hogan and putting St. John's up 1-0. The Red Storm then executed a delayed double steal to perfection, scoring Glancy from third and pushing the lead to two.
St. John's added three more in the fifth, as Glancy doubled to start the inning before coming around to score on a Williams single to left two batters later. Miller and Henshaw then delivered back-to-back base knocks, scoring Williams and pushing the advantage to four. A fielding error by the Sacred Heart first baseman allowed a third run to come home before the end of the frame, pushing the St. John's lead to five after five.
The Johnnies tacked on three more in the sixth, as Folz lifted a sac fly to score Lazzaro before Williams delivered an RBI double and Glancy scored on a wild pitch.
The Pioneers (1-3) plated both of their runs and tallied three of their eight hits in the top of the ninth. Through four games, the Red Storm pitching staff sports a 1.25 ERA and has held the opposition to a .163 batting average.
Due to cold temperatures in the forecast for tomorrow, the Red Storm and the Pioneers will now play a single game on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday will now feature a doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. start.
