Three different Johnnies scored multiple goals on Saturday Night
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 10, 2021) – The St. John's lacrosse team fell to Providence, 19-9, on Saturday night at Chapey Field.
The Red Storm (1-6, 0-6 BIG EAST) offense was led by Mackenzie Iacocca, Joe Madsen and Mike Madsen, all of whom tallied two goals apiece. Jonathan Huber scored his 11th goal of the season and added two assists. Connor Kalmus extended his scoring streak to three games with a single goal while graduate student Ryan Schaeffer added another tally.
Thomas Martello dished out two assists while Jack Lutfi and Patrick Ednie logged one helper.
Providence (4-6, 3-5 BIG EAST) was led by attackmen Matt Grillo and John Hoffman, who combined for seven goals. The Friars had eight players score at least one goal.
Providence opened up the match with back-to-back goals from John Hoffman and Ryan Nawrocki. After Kalmus cut into the Friars' lead with a goal off an assist from Lutfi, the Friars closed out the quarter with two more goals to lead 4-1.
Providence tacked on two more goals in the second to bookend Mike Madsen's eighth marker of the season, giving the Friars a 6-2 lead at the intermission.
Following five unanswered Friar goals to start the third quarter, Schaeffer found the back of the net with 9:34 remaining in the period. The Red Storm then capitalized on a man-up opportunity, as Iacocca scored off a Huber pass to make it an 11-4 game with 6:01 remaining. Huber added a goal of his own before the end of the stanza.
Mike Madsen and Iacocca opened up the fourth quarter scoring with two goals in the span of 34 seconds to cut the Providence lead to six, 13-7, with 12:07 to play. The Friars responded with three of their own over the next three and a half minutes.
In the final minutes of play, Joe Madsen scored a pair of goals in close quarters, but The Friars tacked on three more just before the final buzzer.
St. John's will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Milwaukee for a match-up with the Marquette Golden Eagles. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
