St. John’s Falls to Marquette in Overtime, 9-8

Agres ties career high with 19 saves
Milwaukee, Wis. (Apr. 14, 2021) – The St. John's lacrosse team fell to Marquette in overtime, 9-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Valley Fields.
The Red Storm's (1-7, 0-7 BIG EAST) offense was led by Jonathan Huber, Joe Madsen and Mike Madsen, as the trio tallied two goals apiece. Thomas Martello collected his third goal of the season and added on one assist to his name on the stat sheet.
Graduate Student Ryan Schaeffer dished out two assists while Jack Lutfi, Patrick Ednie, and Connor Kalmus each added single helpers.
Junior goalkeeper Brody Agres tied a career high with 19 saves against the Golden Eagles offense.
Marquette's (2-7, 1-6 BIG EAST) redshirt freshman Devon Cowan tallied his second hat trick of the season. Attackman Griffin Fleming collected two assists and scored the game-winning goal in overtime. Five other Marquette players found the back of the net.
Martello helped put the Johnnies on the board first, after crossing up a Marquette defender behind the circle, before sniping it to the back of the net. The Golden Eagles would then go on to score the next three goals, to take 3-1 lead.
With 7:07 left in the opening quarter, Lutfi was able to find an open Huber on the opposite side of the net. The Great River, N.Y., native then sent one home for his 12th goal of the season. With just under two minutes to play in the quarter, Martello crossed up a Marquette defended behind the circle and connected with Mike Madsen to tie it up at three apiece.
Marquette opened up scoring in the second quarter, as Cowan converted early to give the Golden Eagles a, 4-3, edge. Just under three minutes later Iacocca would connect on a man-up opportunity to knot the score back up at four. Mason Woodward would find the final goal of the half to give the Golden Eagles a 5-4 advantage at the intermission.
Coming out of the break, Marquette would extend its lead to two, 6-4, off another goal from Cowan. Joe Madsen converted the next two goals for the Johnnies to knot the score back up at six at the end of the third quarter.
Opening up the final frame, Huber scored off a passing play to give St. John's a 7-6 lead. The Golden Eagles responded with back-to-back goals to regain advantage, 8-7.
With 3:10 remaining in regulation, Kalmus connected with Mike Madsen, who fired a shot from the right side of the field, and tied the game at eight to force overtime.
Marquette won the opening faceoff in the extra period. After four missed shots, attackman Fleming was able to find an open lane and fire it home to give the Golden Eagles the win.
St. John's will return to DaSilva Memorial Field this Saturday, April 17, to host Villanova. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
