St. John’s Falls to No. 20/NR Villanova, 23-8

Huber ties his season high with four goals
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 17, 2021) – The St. John's lacrosse team fell to No. 20/NR Villanova, 23-8, on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial field.
The Red Storm's (1-8, 0-8 BIG EAST) offense was led by Jonathan Huber, who tied his season high of four goals and now leads the team with 17 tallies on the year. Graduate Student Mike Madsen tallied two goals and an assist while Jack Lutfi and Ryan Schaeffer each added single goals.
Redshirt junior Mackenzie Iacocca dished out two assists for the Johnnies while Patrick Ednie chipped in one.
Villanova junior Matt Campbell found the back of the net six times this afternoon. Wildcat attackmen Corey McManus and Patrick Daly combined for seven goals in the outing. Tucker Goodelle and Gavin Burke each collected a pair of goals and six other Wildcats added on a single goal.
Villanova (5-3, 5-3 BIG EAST) scored the first two goals of the afternoon until Mike Madsen found an open Huber in front of the net to cut into the Nova lead. The Wildcats responded with three more goals until Mike Madsen cashed in on a man-up opportunity for his 12th of the season. Just before the end of the opening quarter, Villanova found the back of the net one more time and extended its lead to four, 6-2.
Only 40 seconds into the second quarter, Schaeffer moved past his defender and fired a shot on net for his 10th of the season. The Wildcats closed out the half with four unanswered goals to take a 10-3 edge in the locker room.
With 7:11 remaining in the third quarter and his team trailing 14-3, Mike Madsen caught the Villanova goalkeeper by surprise while he scored a wraparound goal.
With the Wildcats leading, 21-4, in the middle of the final stanza, Huber scored the next three goals for the Johnnies. With 1:27 to go, Lutfi was able to find the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career and extend his point streak to three games.
St. John's will return to action next weekend when it travels to Denver for a Saturday road tilt with the Pioneers. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
