Red Storm and Hoyas will play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
FREDERICK, Md. (April 16, 2021) – Three Georgetown pitchers held the Red Storm to two hits on Friday night, as St. John's dropped the series opener, 5-1, at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
Angelo Tonas scattered a hit and three walks over seven scoreless innings for the Hoyas, who moved to 1-4 on the campaign. Anthony Redfern picked up the save after pitching his way out of ninth-inning jam, recording two of his three outs via the K and stranding a pair of St. John's runners in scoring position.
Making his first appearance in nearly a month, Brandon Miller tallied both of the Red Storm's hits, breaking up the no-hit bid with an infield single in the fifth before smacking an RBI double off the centerfield wall in the top of the ninth.
David Williams reached base three times, drawing a pair of walks and getting hit by pitch. David Glancy, Mitchell Henshaw, Marty Higgins and Vincent Bianchi also worked walks against the Hoyas.
Despite surrendering just two runs on five hits and striking out seven in five innings of work, Nick Mondak was tagged with his second loss of the year.
Matt Semon struck out the side in an inning of relief before Tim Cunningham punched out three in two frames of scoreless work.
With the loss, St. John's falls to 10-8 with a 1-3 mark in BIG EAST play.
After Mondak fanned the first two batters he faced in the opening frame, AJ Lotsis launched a two-out double to left before advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Michael Willis base knock in the following at-bat, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead after one.
Georgetown struck again in the bottom of the fourth, as Conor Nolan drew a leadoff walk before stealing second and coming home on a Christian Ficca single to center, extending the Hoyas' lead to a pair heading into the fifth.
After a scoreless fifth, the Hoyas added on three more runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the sixth aided by a pair of St. John's errors.
The Red Storm's best opportunity of the game to that point came in the top of the eighth, as Tonas walked the first two batters of the frame before Jacob Grzebinski came on in relief and immediately issued a free pass to load the bases with no outs. The senior southpaw struck out the next two batters he faced before working an inning-ending grounder to short, keeping St. John's off the board.
In the ninth, Glancy and Williams worked leadoff walks before Miller ripped an RBI double off the wall in center, giving the Red Storm its first and only run of the night. With runners on second and third and no out, the next three St. John's batters went down in order, sealing the 5-1 victory for the Hoyas.
St. John's and Georgetown will resume their series tomorrow afternoon in Frederick with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
