Carson Bartels records a double, a home run and seven RBIs on the day
The St. John's baseball team split a doubleheader with Georgetown on Saturday at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium, taking the first game, 9-4, in seven innings before falling in the night cap, 11-7.
St. John's moved to 11-9 (2-4 BIG EAST) while the Hoyas improved to 2-5 (2-3 BIG EAST)
Game One
After seeing its one-run lead erased in the bottom of the sixth inning, the St. John's baseball team responded by batting around and plating five runs in the top of the seventh, as the Red Storm took game one of Saturday's doubleheader, 9-4.
Carson Bartels matched a career-high with four RBIs thanks to a three-run double in the third and a sac fly in the seventh.
Colin Wetterau drove in the game-winning run with a squeeze bunt in the seventh. In that same decisive frame, Jake Lazzaro and Ryan Hogan added run-scoring singles, the latter of which was of the two-run variety.
Ian Murphy started and registered a no-decision, striking out five and giving up three earned runs in five innings of work. Ethan Routzahn punched out two in two innings of no-hit relief to earn his first win of the season.
After leaving a pair of runners on base in the top of the first, the Red Storm pushed one across in the following frame. Marty Higgins led off the inning with a double to right before a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. Brandon Miller then grounded out to first to bring home Higgins before Hogan fouled out to the catcher, ending the Red Storm after only one run.
Georgetown climbed ahead with a three-run homer off the bat of Christian Ficca in the bottom of the second, but the lead was short-lived. With the bases loaded and two outs following a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch, Bartles ripped a bases-clearing double down the left field line, putting the Red Storm ahead 4-3 after two and a half.
Neither side managed to score again before the bottom of the sixth, when the Hoyas used a single, two walks and an error to plate an unearned run and knot the game at four.
With their lead now gone heading into the top of the seventh, the Red Storm sent 10 batters to the dish and exploded for five runs in the frame. David Glancy led off the inning with a five-pitch walk before going first to third on a Justin Folz single in the following at-bat. Next up was Wetterau, who placed a near-perfect squeeze bunt down the first base line to force a late throw home and score Glancy. With runners on the corners and one out, Lazzaro looped a base knock into left to score a run and set up Bartels' sac fly, pushing the St. John's lead to three, 7-4. Following a pair of walks, Hogan laced a first-pitch, two-RBI single up the middle, extending the Red Storm advantage to five, 9-4.
Game Two
In game two, it was Georgetown's turn to blow open a late-inning tie, as the Hoyas plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth en route to an 11-7 victory.
Six different Johnnies recorded hits in game two.
Bartels went 1-for-4 with his second roundtripper as a member of the Red Storm, a three-run shot. Miller also went 1-for-4 with an RBI double.
Higgins singled and drove in a run. Lazzaro picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice.
Brian Morrell, who started at DH and hit clean-up, singled, walked three times and scored twice. Henshaw tallied a base knock, two walks and a run scored.
St. John's wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first, as Miller reached base on a fielding error in the game's first at-bat before eventually coming around to score three batters later on a throwing error by the Georgetown shortstop.
The next few innings were all Hoyas. Connor Nolan and Christian Ficca logged back-to-back RBI singles in the home half of the first, quickly erasing the St. John's lead. Georgetown then added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, pushing its edge to 5-1 heading into the sixth.
With runners on second and third and one out in the top of the sixth, Lazzaro brought in the first run of the inning with an RBI field's choice, trimming the Georgetown lead to three. Next up was Bartels, who took the first pitch he saw and deposited it over the left-field wall, tying the contest at five with a three-run homer, his second three-RBI hit of the afternoon. Paul Orbon was next to the dish and drew a walk before coming around to score on a Miller two-bagger to left center, giving the Red Storm a 6-5 advantage.
After Nick Guzzi struck out the side, all swinging, in a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, St. John's added another tally in the top of the seventh. Morrell walked to lead off the frame before taking second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Two batters later, Higgins dropped a bunt single to bring him home and stretch the Red Storm lead to a pair.
Georgetown erased the St. John's lead in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run shot off the bat of Tony Barreca before hanging up a four-spot in the eighth to move ahead 11-7. The Hoyas sent nine batters to the plate in a frame, highlighted by a Michael Eze two-run triple.
The Hoyas and Red Storm will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon with a single game. First pitch from Frederick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
