Red Storm and Hoyas to begin series on Friday Night at 6 p.m.
After dropping a three-game series against Xavier to open BIG EAST play, the St. John's baseball team will return to action this weekend when it travels to Frederick, Md., for a four-game set with the Georgetown Hoyas. The series will take place at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium, the home of the Frederick Keys, because of restrictions put in place on non-local visiting teams by Montgomery County.
All four of this weekend's games will be streamed live on HoyaVision, which requires a subscription. Live stats will also be available at statbroadcast.com. Fans will not be permitted to attend this weekend's games in accordance with Georgetown University policy.
Friday's opener is set for 6 p.m. before a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Sunday's series finale is also slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Coming off a 19-day pause from competition and playing without the services of three everyday starters due to COVID protocols, the Red Storm dropped its first series of BIG EAST play this past weekend in Queens. In the Friday opener, Nick Mondak, Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn limited the Musketeers to just one run on five hits, allowing the Red Storm to claim a 2-1 victory. Saturday brought forth another dominant pitching performance, as Ian Murphy fanned a career-high 11 batters and surrendered one earned run in seven innings of work. Unfortunately for the Red Storm, Xavier pulled away, scoring 11 runs in the eighth inning of a 12-3 win. For his efforts, Murphy was rewarded with a spot on Monday's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Sunday's series finale also featured a late offensive onslaught from the Musketeers, as the Johnnies coughed up 12 runs over the final two frames.
As a team, St. John's hit just .214 against the Musketeers, but four Johnnies hit .300 or better over the three-game stretch. Making two appearances, including his first start of the year, Brian Morrell went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored three runs. The team leader in batting average this season at .306, Ryan Hogan went 4-for-12 and knocked in a pair while Vincent Bianchi and Marty Higgins both went 3-for-10. Higgins, who started all three games at the hot corner, drove in two runs on the weekend.
Hogan is one of two Johnnies that enters the weekend on a six-game hitting streak alongside redshirt sophomore backstop Colin Wetterau. Wetterau, who has started five of his seven appearances this season, is hitting .412 with a .565 on-base percentage. Despite having a nine-game hitting streak snapped in the series opener with Xavier, graduate student second baseman Carson Bartels has reached base safely in 11 consecutive outings.
Redshirt freshman Jake Lazzaro drew four walks in 13 plate appearances this weekend, pushing his season long total to 21 in 17. His 1.24 walks per game are good enough for second in the nation behind James Madison's Chase DeLauter, who has walked 14 times in 10 appearances. The single-season St. John's record for walks is 51 in 57 games by Doug Latrenta during the College World Series campaign of 1978. A .293 hitter, Lazzaro's .488 on-base percentage ranks 60th in the nation through games played on Tuesday. The Oceanside, N.Y., native, who has accounted for nearly a quarter of the team's 91 walks, is also 7-for-8 on stolen base attempts this spring.
Georgetown will welcome the Johnnies looking for its first win of the spring. The Hoyas dropped their season opener, 13-4, to VCU on April 7 before being shutout in three straight games. Connecticut swept a Saturday seven-inning doubleheader in Storrs by a combined score of 16-0 before Towson won a 4-0 midweek decision at Shirley Povich Field on Tuesday.
In the season opener against VCU, pinch hitter Andrew Ciufo went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, lifting a two-run homer to left and legging out an RBI single. Catcher Matt Stone also left the yard in that contest against the Rams.
Centerfielder Conor Nolan, a grad transfer from Princeton, has started all four games and is hitting .400 on the campaign. Fellow outfielder AJ Lotsis has recorded base knocks in three of the team's four games and is batting .333 on the young season.
St. John's will look to avenge a three-game sweep in its last series against Georgetown at Shirley Povich Field in April of 2019. That weekend, the Johnnies posted just five total runs on 19 hits while striking out 40 times.
The most recent series between the two teams aside, St. John's has enjoyed tremendous success against the Hoyas historically, carrying a 64-17 all-time record against Georgetown into this weekend's four-game set. Prior to 2019, St. John's had not lost a series against the Hoyas since 2009 and had never been swept in a series featuring three or more games.
St. John's had won eight of its last nine games and 23 of its last 26 against Georgetown prior to 2019.
