Red Storm Dominates at St. John’s Invitational

The Johnnies earned seven first-place finishes
NEW YORK, N.Y. (April 16, 2021) – The Red Storm track & field team shined at the St. John's Invitational on Friday, securing seven first-place finishes at Icahn Stadium.
"Our team posted numerous wins and personal bests despite the cold, wind and rain that we dealt with," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Coach Pompey's sprinters heated up the track in sprint events while coach McCree's throw corps closed the meet with a sweep in the Javelin. We have much to be proud of and much to look forward to in the weeks ahead."
Leah Anderson took first place in three events for the second straight weekend. The senior sprinter earned the top spot in the 400 meters with a time of 55.17 before capturing another first-place finish in the 200 meters with a mark of 23.83.
Anderson's time in the 200-meter dash ranks first in the BIG EAST this season. Her finish in the 400 meters is the second-fastest mark on the conference leaderboard.
Junior Skyy Diop joined Anderson on the podium in both disciplines, grabbing third place in the 400 and 200 meters with times of 56.36 and 24.74, respectively.
Anderson, Diop, Avon Samuels and Chantai Smith posted a mark of 3:53.24 in the 4x400-meter relay, seizing another top finish for the Johnnies.
St. John's throws squad swept the first three spots in the javelin. Olivia Pantale notched a distance of 40.56 meters, good enough for first place. Esmeralda Reyes took second with a throw of 39.41 meters, as Nina D'Amato placed third with a mark of 37.13 meters.
Senior Onassha Rogers led the Red Storm in the 100-meter dash, seizing a first-place finish with a personal-best time of 12:09.
Claire Cushing secured first place in the 1500 meters with a mark of 4:47.69. Stephanie Gerland followed close behind, crossing the finish line in 4:49.13 to grab third place.
Freshman Ioanna Kyprianou rounded out St. John's list of event winners, recording a top distance of 10.31 meters in the triple jump.
Antonia Frazier notched three third-place finishes on the day. Frazier posted a mark of 4.92 meters in the long jump and surpassed a height of 1.45 meters in the high jump. She also had a strong showing in the 100-meter hurdles, earning her final podium spot with a time of 15.68.
Gabriella Kelly took second place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 2.90 meters.
The Johnnies return to action on Saturday, May 1 to host the Tom Farrell Classic at DaSilva Memorial Field. The Red Storm will honor its seniors at 12:15 p.m. before sprint events begin.
