St. John’s Captures Five First-Place Finishes at Army Twilight Meet

Leah Anderson led the way with three event victories
WEST POINT, N.Y. (April 23, 2021) – Led by three first-place finishes from Leah Anderson, the St. John's track & field team captured 14 podium spots on Friday at the Army Twilight Meet.
"Our team was tremendous today and was led by Leah Anderson's outstanding run in the 400 meters that will get her into the NCAA East Preliminary Meet," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "We had numerous personal bests which shows that all of the hard work is paying off. We are all looking forward to being home next week for the Tom Farrell Classic."
Anderson dominated in the 400 meters, posting a top time of 52.95. The mark ranks 12th on the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying list and 30th in the nation this outdoor season.
The senior sprinter followed that performance by capturing first place in the 200 meters with a time of 23.67. Anderson's mark paces the BIG EAST and ranks 40th on the NCAA East Outdoor Qualifying leaderboard.
Skyy Diop also took second place in the 200 meters with a time of 24.62 while teammate Avon Samuels followed close behind with a mark of 24.82.
Anderson joined Samuels, Onassha Rogers and Brooklyn Chestnut in the 4x100-meter relay, earning a first-place finish with a time of 46.07. The Red Storm relay squad surpassed its own conference-leading mark of 46.31 that was set at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships on April 9.
Rogers went on to secure first place in the 100 meters with a personal-best time of 12.04. Chestnut finished the event in second with a mark of 12.12.
The Johnnies' throws team also had a strong showing throughout the day. Olivia Pantale took first place in the javelin throw with a distance of 40.85 meters while Nina D'Amato notched third place with a mark of 36.79 meters.
Junior Samantha Morillo recorded a second-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 14.64 meters before seizing third place in the discus throw with a mark of 44.71 meters.
Therese Gallagher racked up another podium spot for St. John's in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in second place with a time of 11:40.73. Stephanie Gerland posted a third-place finish in the 5000 meters with a mark of 17:36.21.
St. John's will return to action on May 1 for the Tom Farrell Classic at DaSilva Memorial Field.
