Hoyas erase 4-0 Red Storm lead to claim the series victory
Trailing 4-0 after five innings of play, Georgetown plated a single run in the bottom of the sixth before adding on five more in the seventh, as the Hoyas claimed the series victory with a 6-4 win over St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
Justin Folz led the way offensively for St. John's, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Carson Bartels left the yard for the second time in as many days with a solo shot in the fifth. Brian Morrell also added a run-scoring hit. Marty Higgins, Jake Lazzaro and Ryan Hogan also contributed base knocks in the series finale.
Making his second collegiate start, freshman Tyler Roche allowed just one run in five innings of work.
A two-out rally allowed the Johnnies (11-10, 2-5 BIG EAST) to jump ahead in the top of the first, as Folz doubled to left center and Morrell poked an RBI single to right, giving the Red Storm an early 1-0 edge.
After a scoreless second, the Red Storm utilized some more two-out magic in the top of the third, as Hogan singled to center before Folz launched a two-run shot over the wall in right, pushing the Red Storm lead to 3-0 after two and a half.
St. John's added to its advantage in the top of the fifth, as Bartels blasted a solo shot down the left field line for his second round tripper of the weekend.
Georgetown got on the board for the first time in the home half of the sixth, using an AJ Lotsis sac fly to cut the Red Storm lead to three, 4-1.
After sending just three batters to the plate in the top of the seventh, the Johnnies watched the Hoyas hang up a five-spot in the home half of the frame. Lotsis and Michael Eze tallied two-RBI base knocks in the inning.
The Red Storm tried for one final two-out rally in the ninth. Higgins singled and Lazzaro was hit by a pitch to bring up the go-ahead run, but Jacob Grzebinski got Bartels looking to end the contest.
St. John's will return to action next weekend with four games against Seton Hall at The Jack. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
