Marty Higgins doubles twice in 3-for-4 outing
Creighton plated six runs with two swings of the bat, using a grand slam and a two-run homer to push past St. John's, 6-1, on Friday night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
Third baseman Marty Higgins continued his stellar stretch of play, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Higgins, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, has now doubled five times in his last five games.
Vincent Bianchi singled twice and scored the Red Storm's lone run of the evening. David Glancy and Brian Morrell added base knocks for the Johnnies (13-13, 4-8 BIG EAST).
Dylan Tebrake, who was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday, tossed 8.1 innings of one-run ball for Creighton, scattering seven hits and a walk while striking out nine. He improved to 6-0 on the season with the win. Nick Mondak was tagged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in five innings of work. The redshirt junior southpaw fell to 3-3 but lowered his season-long ERA to 1.72.
Creighton (15-8, 7-1 BIG EAST) set the tone early, as three straight batters reached base to load the bags with one out in the bottom of the first. Next up was Parker Upton, who launched a grand slam to left center after his at-bat was extended due to a dropped foul ball earlier in the at-bat.
Higgins became the first Red Storm player to reach base with a double down the right field line in the top of the third. Two innings later, he recorded the team's second hit with an infield single in the fifth.
The Red Storm's best chance of the early innings came in that fifth frame, as Higgins' hit was preceded by a walk to Colin Wetterau. The pair advanced to second and third on a Jake Lazzaro grounder to the right side, but neither managed to make it home.
Creighton added onto its lead in the bottom of the sixth, as David Vilches hit a two-run shot to left to make it 6-0 in favor of the Bluejays.
In the top of the seventh, Bianchi singled to third base before coming around to score on Higgins' second two-bagger of the night, putting the Johnnies on the board and trimming the Creighton advantage to five, 6-1.
The Red Storm threatened again in the top of the ninth, as Morrell and Bianchi logged back-to-back one-out singles before moving into scoring position on a Wetterau grounder. With men on second and third, Creighton managed to retire Higgins for the first time and strand the runners.
The Johnnies and the Bluejays will resume their series with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
