Huskies claim the Sunday finale, series
Connecticut scored three unearned runs with two outs in the top of the 10th to take down St. John's, 5-3, in Sunday's series finale at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Brandon Miller answered with an RBI double in the home half of the inning, but it was not enough to stop the Huskies (23-15, 7-3 BIG EAST) from taking the series, three games to one.
Tim McHugh recorded the first multi-hit game of his collegiate career, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Ryan Hogan singled and drove in a run while Carson Bartels, Brian Morrell, Nick Cirelli and Marty Higgins also added base knocks for St. John's (15-18, 6-13 BIG EAST).
Freshman right-hander Tyler Roche registered another stellar effort at Jack Kaiser Stadium, striking out six in 4.1 frames of shutout work. The Bronx native scattered five hits and a pair of walks in his fifth collegiate start.
Ethan Routzahn was tagged with his first loss of the year. The right-hander surrendered three runs, all unearned, in 2.2 innings. He fanned two and saw his season-long ERA fall to 1.45.
UConn threatened for the first time in the top of the second, leading off the inning with back-to-back base knocks. Roche responded by fanning the next two batters before a walk loaded the bases for BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Kyler Fedko. Roche dug deep and rung up Fedko looking to strike out the side and keep the Huskies off the board.
After a 1-2-3 inning from Roche in the UConn third, the Johnnies plated the game's first run in the home half of the frame. Jake Lazzaro drew a one-out walk before Bartels smacked the first pitch of his at-bat through the right side, sending Lazzaro to third and setting up an RBI grounder off the bat of Hogan.
After Roche stranded a pair of UConn base runners in the fourth, the Red Storm added on to its lead in the bottom of the inning. Higgins reached on a fielder's choice and stole second to set the table for a McHugh RBI double, as the Commack, N.Y., native drove in his first collegiate run with a ball to the wall in left, making it a 2-0 game in favor of the Johnnies.
Following a scoreless fifth for both sides, the Huskies cut the St. John's lead in half in the top of the sixth. Erik Stock led off the frame with a double to center before coming around to score on a Chris Winkel single in the next at-bat. Nick Guzzi then worked a double play ball before Ben Adams recorded the final out of the inning.
UConn knotted the score at two in the top of the eighth, as a two-out double to right center off the bat of Zach Bushling scored Chris Brown all the way from first.
After an error and infield single loaded the bases for UConn in the top of the 10th, it appeared as if Routzahn might pull off an improbable escape act. The sidewinder got Christian Fedko and Brown to go down on strikes and battled back to push a 3-0 count full before throwing ball four to Bushling for the inning's first run. Kyler Fedko then laced a two-run single to left, giving UConn a 5-2 lead.
With one out in the home half of the 10th, Miller ripped a two-bagger down the right field line to score Bartels, but the next two batters went down in order to end the contest.
St. John's will return to action on Friday with the first of four BIG EAST games against Butler. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
