Freshman Peicheng Chen earned a second-place finish with a three-round score of 1-under 215 as the St. John's men's golf team wrapped up its final day at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational on Sunday.
After turning in a 1-over 145 to complete day one in a seven-way tie for 10th, Chen rose eight spots to match Ryan Tall of Lafayette and Brandon Gillis of Rhode Island in second. Chen drained six birdies on the day to wrap up the final round with a score of 2-under 70. The Johnnies' newcomer finished the event with 13 total birdies to lead the team and tie Seton Hall's Angus O'Brien for the third most at the event.
Senior Jack Simon also cracked the top-five with his even three-round score of 216, tying Cornell's Benjamin Choe and Yale's Ben Carpenter for fifth place. The Sparta, N.Y., native's final round effort was highlighted by a pair of eagles on the par-4 fourth and par-5 12th holes.
"Chen fared very well in his first collegiate event," said Head Coach Mal Galletta. "I'm very proud of the way he played. Jack also continued his MVP play into the start of this season, earning a top-five finish. This is a great way to head into our home event, The Doc Gimmler, next weekend."
As a team, the Red Storm finished ninth overall in the field of 15, turning in a three-round score of 892.
Senior Tyler Gerbavsits recorded a combined six birdies at the two-day event, while sophomore Doug Beney, junior Ryan Rittberger and senior Joseph Busiello each drained a pair of birdies in their final round of play.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sept. 11-12 for The Doc Gimmler at Bethpage State Park Red Course.
