Anderson Shatters School Record at MLK Tribute Meet

The Red Storm secured three first-place finishes
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- After an extended break, the St. John's track and field team returned to Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon, taking home 12 top-three finishes across 17 events.
Leah Anderson broke the school indoor record in the 300-meter dash with a winning time of 37.89. Anderson's victory sets a new program mark over previous record holder Youree Spence's time of 39.02 in 1987. Avon Samuels and Tatyana McKenzie finished in second and third in the 300-meter race, recording times of 39.65 and 40.46, respectively.
Anderson captured a second-straight win in the 60-meter dash with a career-best time of 7.45. The reigning BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer moved to second place on the St. John's all-time list, passing Phobay Kutu-Atoi. Senior Onassha Rogers and sophomore Brooklyn Chestnut rounded out the top-three in the event with times of 7.60 and 7.73.
In the 200-meter dash, Samuels made the most of her 2022 debut with a win and a time of 24.74. McKenzie captured third with a time of 25.01 to give the Red Storm yet another top-three finish.
In the jumping events, Amanda Belgrave put together another strong effort in the long jump, recording a season-best distance of 5.47 meters on her third attempt. Antonia Frazier looked impressive in her season debut in the high jump with a mark of 1.45 meters. Both Belgrave and Frazier finished in second in their respective events.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, to compete in the Villanova Indoor Meet.
