St. John’s Set to Host Annual Fencing Invitational

Red Storm will host several top fencing programs in its home event
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's fencing program will host its home invitational for the first time in two years at Taffner Fieldhouse starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The Red Storm will welcome five of the top fencing programs in the nation: Columbia, Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State. The six programs have combined to win 30 of the last 31 national titles. Notre Dame won its third championship in four years last year.
In 2021, Notre Dame, Penn State and St. John's all finished in the top five at the NCAA Championships. Notre Dame enters Saturday's tournament as the top-ranked team in the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association Poll.
In its lone team competition of the 2021-2022 season, the men's fencing team enjoyed an excellent day at the Brandeis Invitational. Led by foil specialist Jan Jurkiewicz, the men's squad scored four victories over MIT, Brandies, Yale and Cornell. Arianna Pappone led the way for the women's team with 11 wins in 15 bouts.
In 2020, the Red Storm men's team captured the St. John's Invitational title with wins over Columbia, Notre Dame, Harvard and Penn State. The women's squad finished in fourth.
After competition on Saturday, the Red Storm will make the short trip to Brooklyn to take part in the City Square-Off on Feb. 13.
