Red Storm shoots two under as a team during Tuesday’s third round
GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Leading after 36 holes by two shots, the St. John's men's golf team pulled away from the field in authoritative fashion on Tuesday afternoon during the final round of the Nassau Invitational, shooting two under as a team at Nassau Country Club to claim the tournament title.
With Tuesday's stellar showing, the Red Storm put a bow on the fall season by winning three straight team titles. The Johnnies claimed first at the UConn Invitational from Oct. 2-4 before winning the Lehigh Invitational this past weekend.
Tyler Gerbavsits (-2) claimed medalist honors after shooting his second consecutive 68 on Tuesday, beating out second-place Dragon Theam of Army by four strokes. The graduate student from Huntington bogeyed his first hole of the day and did not make a mistake the rest of the way, carding three birdies and 14 pars, including back-to-back birdies on holes five and six.
Coming into the day in a tie for eighth at six over, Ryan Rittberger fired off the tournament's low round, logging five birdies on his way to a three-under 67.
Peicheng Chen also finished in the top 10, taking solo eighth after posting a Tuesday 73 to close the tournament at six over.
Jack Simon carded an even-par 70 to finish in a tie for 19th while Brendan Smith posted a final-round 73 to tie for 47th.
