Red Storm travels to Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex for start of 2022-23 season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's track and field team will kick off its 2022-23 indoor campaign with a short trip to Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y., for the Youree Spence-Garcia Invitational on Saturday.
Formerly named the Bill Ward Invitational, the Johnnies have found great success at the annual season opener. Last year, standout sprinter and St. John's alumnus Leah Anderson collected wins in the 60-meter and 500-meter dashes as a part of 13 top-three finishes across 15 events for the Red Storm.
Several familiar faces return for another campaign, including Brooklyn Chestnut who will headline the sprints portion of the squad. The Indianapolis native will compete in the 60-meter dash along with fellow returner Tatyana McKenzie. McKenzie is coming off an excellent outdoor campaign, including a new BIG EAST record in the 100-meter dash at the conference championships in May.
Senior Mandana Vouillemin returns for another season in the Red and White. Last season, the Nice, France native was a versatile part of the Red Storm squad, competing the 4x400-meter relay at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Preliminary Round in May. Vouillemin will look for a strong result in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes along with the long jump on Saturday.
Graduate student Samantha Morillo-Martinez leads the throws team. A season ago, the Valhalla, N.Y., native captured a bronze medal in the shot put throw with a heave of 13.47 meters at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in February. She is poised to get her final season in Queens off to a solid start as she takes part in the shot put and weight throw competitions.
Pole vaulter and school recordholder Meghan Ladd headlines the jump portion of the Red Storm. On April 9, the Folsom, Calif., native cleared the 3.50-meter bar at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships in Randall's Island to establish a new progam mark in the event.
