Red Storm collects six individual wins on Saturday
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team excelled in its indoor season opener at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Saturday, posting eight wins across 15 events.
A pair of returners led the way in the sprints portion of the competition. Brooklyn Chestnut collected her first win of the season in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.54. Tatyana McKenzie finished second just behind Chestnut with a mark of 7.58. McKenzie found herself in the winner's circle in the 300-meter dash, crossing the line at 38.53. Freshman Nora Haugen made an immediate in her track and field debut, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.03. Three newcomers put forth solid efforts in the 500-meter run as Haugen, Quitterie Dujardin and Chinenye Onuorah each grabbed a top-five finish in their respective collegiate debuts. In the distance events, Ana Markovina, another first-year Johnnie, secured her first win of the season in the 1,000-meter run. The Old Westbury, N.Y., native posted a time of 3:02.19, more than half a second faster than the second-place finisher. Senior Claire Cushing added a victory in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:34.83, and Hannah Huleatt finished in third with a mark of 11:05.05. The 4x800-meter relay team of Markovina, Leilani Robinson, Jenna D'Onofrio and Tiffany-Ann Matturro grabbed yet another win for the Red Storm, logging a time of 10:04.03.
Another newcomer grabbed her first win of her career as Jamora Alves took home first place in the shot put throw with a toss of 13.15 meters. Samantha Morillo-Martinez secured second with a heave of 13.12 meters. In the weight throw, Ismini Andreou finished second with 15.18 meters while Morillo-Martinez logged a toss of 15.03 meters to earn third place.
The Red Storm will take an extended hiatus before returning to Ocean Breeze for the MLK Tribute Meet on Jan. 16.
