St. John’s Competes at Brandeis Invitational

Jan Jurkiewicz tallied 14 wins in a dominant performance on Sunday
WALTHAM, Mass. (Dec. 4, 2022)- The St. John's fencing team competed in its first event of the 2022-23 season at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. The Johnnies tallied victories over four different opponents, MIT, Brandeis, Boston College and Cornell.
For the second consecutive season, the men's portion of the squad secured four wins in an impressive showing on the strip. Foil fencer Jan Jurkiewicz made a statement in his season debut, logging 14 individual triumphs against just one defeat to lead the foil team to a record of 29-16 on the day. Coming off an appearance in the NCAA Championships in 2021-22, Ahmed Ferjani continued his run of excellence, racking up 10 wins to lead all men's saber fencers. Mauricio Pellegrino led the epee fencers with a sterling mark of 8-1 on Sunday.
On the women's side, the Red Storm finished with a team record of 3-2. Julia Cieslar was a big part of the Johnnies' success inside the Gosman Athletic Center. The sophomore piled up 13 wins in the saber category in an impressive start to her 2022-23 campaign. In her debut as a Johnnie, Antonina Lachman tied Cieslar for the team lead with 13 victories to propel the women's foil squad to an overall mark of 25-20 on the day.
The Red Storm will return to action as a team in 2023 when they host the St. John's Invitational inside Taffner Fieldhouse on Jan. 21.
