St. John’s Returns to The Armory for Rutgers Open

The Red Storm will compete in Rutgers’ home meet for the first time in eight years
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2022)- After successful outings at the Metropolitan Championships and Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge last weekend, the St. John's track and field team will make the short trip to The Armory in Manhattan to take part in the Rutgers Open on Friday. The two-day event is slated to start at 11:30 a.m. with the distance medley relay.
This marks the first time the Red Storm will compete in the Scarlet Knights' home meet since 2014 which was highlighted by Claire Mooney's third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.65.
Leah Anderson will look to tally her fourth consecutive win in the 200-meter dash against top competition. The graduate student earned the top spot at the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge with a time of 23.89. Anderson will also race in the 60-meter dash for the first time in four meets, most recently winning convincingly at the MLK Tribute Meet on Jan. 19 with a new personal best of 7.45 seconds.
Skyy Diop and Tatyana McKenzie are just some of the sprinters that will join Anderson in the 400-meter dash. Diop posted another strong result last weekend at The Armory with a time of 56. 25, good for fifth place while McKenzie will look to continue her solid indoor season that includes several podium finishes and a season-best 400-meter dash time of 58.17 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 28. Avon Samuels, Anderson, Diop and McKenzie will compete in 4x400 and 4x200-meter relays; the quartet took home a resounding victory in the 4x400-meter relay at the John Thomas Terrier Classic with a time of 3:42.70.
Coming off a record-breaking performance at the Metropolitan Championships last Friday, Meghan Ladd will look to continue her strong sophomore season in the pole vault. Colette Metcalf and Berit Friedenbach both notched personal best performances in the pole vault at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex last weekend, clearing the 3.05-meter bar to finish in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Claire Cushing will look to lead the Red Storm in distance category once again. The junior out of Ontario is set to compete in the 3,000-meter run for the first time since her win at the Bill Ward Invitational on Dec. 4. Hannah Huleatt eyes her second-straight top-three finish after grabbing third at the Metropolitan Championships with a time of 11:03.18.
In the jump events, Amanda Belgrave recorded a new personal best distance in the triple jump at the Dr. Sander Invitational, with a leap of 11.63 meters while Ioanna Kyprianou jumped 4.77 meters in the long jump last week at Ocean Breeze.
