Red Storm extends winning streak to four matches, move to 7-1
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's men's tennis team proved dominant in its short road trip to the Queens Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Storm swept all eight completed matches on the day to move past Division II opponent Queens College, 7-0.
Two-time BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Axel Vila Antuna added another straight sets win to his name, beating the Knights' no. 1 player Kareem Rashad, 6-4, 6-4.
Charlie James and Vlad Vasilache tallied wins on the afternoon and have continued to capitalize on recent opportunities in singles play. Both Johnnies hold undefeated 3-0 records in individual competition.
On the no. 4 court, rookie standout Carl Gustavsson posted a team-high sixth singles win over the Knights' Omar El Shehawey, 6-4, 6-4. Meanwhile, Ignacio Garcia notched a fifth singles win on the year, cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 decision over his opponent Lucas Demuth.
In doubles play, James and Ryota Kaneda earned their fourth win in the no. 2 slot with a 6-1 victory over the Knights' El Shehawey and Moritz Borges. Gustavsson and Giuseppe De Camelis landed on the right side of a 6-3 decision against opponents Tim Ostheimer and Mariano Biblioni.
After a 10-day layoff, the Red Storm will resume its five-match road swing when it pays a visit to Dartmouth on Feb. 26. First serve from Hanover, N.H., is scheduled for 12 p.m.
