Red Storm will take on Hofstra in the consolation game on Sunday
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.- In its first game of the Long Island Cup, the St. John's lacrosse fell to Stony Brook, 17-10, under the lights Friday night at James M. Shuart Stadium.
The Seawolves were strong in man-up situations, going 5-of-7 in extra-man scenarios to move past the Red Storm in Hempstead, N.Y.
For the third time in his career and the first in over two years, Jonathan Huber put five goals in the back of the net. Midfielder Dylan Willis posted a strong night as well. The senior added two goals and two assists, totaling a career-high four points.
Brian Kelly notched his second consecutive two-goal performance and dished out one helper. Caleb Zuhoski netted his first tally of the season and Jack Lutfi provided the assist on one of Huber's goals.
In the opening quarter, the two sides went back and forth with three lead changes and three ties in the first 15 minutes. St. John's (0-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Dylan Willis opened the scoring as he launched one into the twine for his first goal of 2022. Less than two minutes later, Willis fed Huber for a turnaround look, the first of his five goals.
After four straight Stony Brook (3-0) tallies, Huber sent two into the back of the net to knot the score, 4-4. Kelly passed one over the net to the top of the offensive zone where the redshirt-senior fired in a goal for his 75th career point.
The Seawolves held the Red Storm to a scoreless second period, expanding its lead to 8-4 heading into halftime.
After a Stony Brook goal just 48 seconds into the second half, St John's responded with two tallies to cut the deficit to 9-6. Kelly halted an ensuing 5-0 Seawolves run when the freshman spun around an opposing defender and fired a shot in mid-air into the top corner of the net.
Zuhoski recorded his first goal of the season, hitting a fall-away shot with 8:24 remaining in the game. Willis and Huber added their final goals of the evening, just 29 seconds apart, to round out the Red Storm's scoring effort.
On Sunday, the Johnnies will take on Hofstra for the 24th time in their history, at James M. Shuart Stadium. In 2021, the Red Storm outlasted the Pride in a 19-18 overtime thriller. First face-off is slated for 3 p.m.
