St. John’s to Take on Hofstra in Sunday Matinee

Red Storm will face the Pride in the Long Island Cup consolation game
QUEENS, N.Y.- After falling to Stony Brook, 17-10, in its first game of the Long Island Cup on Friday night. The St. John's lacrosse team will meet Hofstra in the consolation contest at 3 p.m., on Sunday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Sunday's matchup in Hempstead, N.Y. will be streamed on FloSports.
After three ties and three lead changes in the first 15 minutes on Friday, the Seawolves added 10 of the next 12 goals to move past the Red Storm. Stony Brook cashed in on 5-of-7 extra man opportunities during Friday night's tilt.
Attackman Jonathan Huber reached five goals for the third time in his career against Stony Brook. The redshirt senior registered his ninth career hat-trick just 12:10 into the game.
Dylan Willis logged a career-night as well with four points (2 G, 2 A), including contributing on St. John's first three goals. The senior has found a knack for finding opening teammates, as he leads the team in helpers with six.
Freshman Brian Kelly continued to be a catalyst for the Johnnies attack against Stony Brook. The Red Hook N.Y., native scored two unassisted goals, including an acrobatic finish to halt a 5-0 Seawolves run in the third quarter. The rookie is locked in a three-way tie for a team-high in points (8) with Willis and Huber.
In Hofstra's first matchup of the Long Island Cup, the Pride led LIU, 9-7, heading into the fourth quarter. The Sharks outscored the home side 7-2 in the final period to clinch a spot in the Long Island Cup final.
The meeting on Sunday will mark the 14th consecutive and 24th all-time meeting between St. John's and Hofstra. Last season in Hempstead, Mike Madsen found the back of the net on a dish from Thomas Martello to lift the Red Storm over the Pride in an overtime thriller, 19-18.
Prior to the consolation game between St. John's and Hofstra, Stony Brook will meet LIU for the first-ever Long Island Cup title at 12 p.m.
Next week, the Johnnies will return home for its first-ever meeting with Manhattan at 12:30 p.m. in Queens.
