The Red Storm will split up and compete in two meets starting on Friday
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will split in two and participate in two meets over the weekend.
Part of the team, headlined by reigning BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week Leah Anderson, will make the short trip to The Armory in Manhattan to compete in the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge. The two-day meet is slated to begin Friday at 9:00 a.m.
The other portion of the Johnnies will return to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. to take part in the Metropolitan Championships against top teams from the tri-state area. The single day event will commence Friday at 10:00 a.m.
Last week at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, Anderson dominated the field in her three races, capturing wins in the 200-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay. The graduate student put on a historic performance in the 400-meter breaking the St. John's record with a time of 53.11. Anderson will compete in all three races again this weekend at the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge.
Fellow sprinters Skyy Diop, Avon Samuels and Tatyana McKenzie will join Anderson at The Armory and will look to continue each of their strong seasons. All three athletes will race in the 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay while Samuels will take part in the 200-meter dash.
Sophomore Brooklyn Chestnut will look to extend her streak of top-three finishes in the 60-meter dash, most recently finishing in second at the Villanova Invitational with a time of 7.73.
Amanda Belgrave will headline the jump events at The Armory. The senior notched her first win of the season in the long jump at the Villanova Invitational on Jan. 22, with a leap of 5.54 meters.
Brianna Burkley and Malia Jones will lead the way for the sprinters at the Metropolitan Championships at Ocean Breeze. Both athletes will race in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Burkley registered strong times in both races at the MLK Tribute Meet on Jan. 19 while Jones set a new personal best in the 400-meter dash at the Villanova Invitational.
In long-distance competition, Claire Cushing is set to make her season debut in the mile run. The junior out of Ontario, Canada will look to add another win alongside her victory in the 3,000-meter run at the Bill Ward Invitational on Dec. 4. Mia Forster will race in the 5,000-meter run for the first time this season. The Marblehead, Mass., native has been versatile this season, competing in mile and 3,000-meter runs along with the 4x800-meter relay in her first season with the Johnnies.
After the pairs of meets this weekend, the Red Storm will return to The Armory next weekend to take part in the Rutgers Invitational on Friday, Feb. 11.
