Johnnies allow only one run over final six frames
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team dropped its delayed rubber match with Manhattan, 6-2, on Monday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
David Glancy and Colin Wetterau delivered RBI hits for the Red Storm (2-13) while Luke Orbon doubled and scored a run. Tate Ballestero and Jackson Tucker also tallied base knocks in the loss.
Vincent Bianchi started on the hill and was tagged with the loss. Southpaw Oliver McCarthy entered in the second inning and gave 3.1 frames of one-run relief before freshman Joe Mascio tossed 2.0 scoreless innings for the Johnnies. Right-hander Tim Cunningham allowed only one hit and one unearned run over the final 2.2 frames.
Manhattan jumped ahead early, sending 10 batters to the plate and pushing across four runs in the opening frame. The Jaspers drew four walks and a hit-by-pitch in the inning.
After McCarthy got out of bases-loaded jam in the second, the Jaspers pushed across another run in the top of the third to make it 5-0. Manhattan drew four walks and was hit by another pitch before leaving the bases loaded.
McCarthy stranded three Jaspers on base again in the top of the fourth before breaking through in the home half of the inning. Orbon smacked a lead-off double to left before coming around to score two batters later on a Glancy two-bagger down the line. After a Ballestero fly ball moved Glancy up 90 feet, Wetterau laced an RBI base knock up the middle, shaving the Manhattan lead to three, 5-2. St. John's continued to threaten in the frame, as back-to-back walks loaded the bases with two outs before Chris Conniff popped out to end the inning.
St. John's had opportunities in each of the next two innings, but could not cut into the Manhattan lead. The Red Storm left a runner on third in the bottom of the fifth before stranding two in scoring position in the home half of the sixth.
The Red Storm threatened again in the bottom of the ninth, putting men on first and second with one, but could not push across either runner.
The Johnnies will return to action tomorrow after at Jack Kaiser Stadium against LIU. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN3.
