Jackson Tucker launches his first career home run for the Johnnies
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to LIU on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Jackson Tucker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, launching his first collegiate home run to put St. John's ahead in the bottom of the third. Colin Wetterau also logged a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. David Glancy and Kevin Michaels also registered singles for the Red Storm (2-14).
Brandon Backman started on the hill for the Johnnies, making his first appearance since March of 2020. The graduate student threw 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three in a no-decision. Jude Zern and Joe Joe Rodriguez combined to blank the Sharks over the final two frames.
After two and a half scoreless innings to start the contest, Tucker plated the game's first run by depositing a ball over the left field wall, giving the Johnnies a 1-0 lead after three.
LIU quickly knotted the game in the following frame, stringing together a pair of singles and a free pass to load the bases for Seth Surrett, who brought home the tying run with a fielder's choice to second.
St. John's jumped back in front in the home half of the fourth after Wetterau roped a leadoff double to right center before advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scoring on an Austin Machado RBI groundout to the right side.
The Red Storm lead was short-lived, as LIU responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to move ahead 3-2 on a walk and a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
After a scoreless sixth, Michael Edelman led off the seventh with a solo round tripper to left center, pushing the LIU lead to 4-2 at the stretch.
Three LIU pitchers combined to retire the final 11 Johnnies of the game, erasing hopes of a Red Storm comeback.
St. John's will return to action on Friday at 3 p.m. when the team begins a three-game set against Sacred Heart at Jack Kaiser Stadium. All three contests will air on ESPN3.
