Glancy clubbed his second home run in as many games
QUEENS, N.Y.- Despite an early deficit, the St. John's baseball team enjoyed another offensive explosion and cruised past Sacred Heart, 15-5, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
David Glancy recorded his sixth consecutive game with a base hit and the second straight contest with a home run. He finished the afternoon 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI sacrifice fly. The Neptune, N.J., native is batting .500 (3-for-6) during the series with two home runs, two sac flies and six RBIs.
After career day in the series opener, Kevin Michaels followed up with a 3-for-4 day at the dish with a double, two RBIs and one run scored on against Sacred Heart.
The bottom of the order provided plenty of offense with Colin Wetterau knocking home one run and Austin Machado and Nick Cirelli recording two RBIs apiece.
Tate Ballestero shined once again with a bat in his hands, going 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. The Morristown, N.J., native is hitting .666 (6-for-9) so far this weekend with two doubles and two RBIs.
All nine starters recorded at least one base hit and one run scored for St. John's (4-14)
On the mound, Joe Mascio earned his first win of the season, pitching one scoreless frame in relief of starter Dylan Johnson in the fifth inning. Chuck Sanzio pitched 4.0 shutout innings to put away the Pioneers (1-16).
Sacred Heart grabbed an early lead in the opening half-inning. After a leadoff single by Justin Jordan, Ryan Donnelly knocked him in with a double to left center. George Sutherland doubled the Pioneers' advantage with an RBI single that Donnelly home. Sacred Heart led, 2-0, after three outs.
The Red Storm responded in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on first and second, Michaels doubled down the left field line to cut the Pioneer lead in half, 2-1, after the first inning of play.
After a scoreless second, St. John's would grab its first lead of the afternoon. Glancy walked to lead off the frame before Ballestero stroked a double to left center tie the score at two. Two batters later, Michaels tallied his second RBI in as many at-bats with a single that brought Ballestero to the plate to give the Johnnies the 3-2 advantage after three.
Both sides traded runs in the fourth to keep the margin at one, 4-3, before Sacred Heart wrestled the lead back in the top of the fifth. The Pioneers got the first two runners on to start the inning before a fielder's choice and a groundout gave SHU the 5-4 edge.
The Red Storm replied with authority in the bottom of the fifth with six runs to take the lead back, 10-5. With two runners in scoring position, Wetterau beat out an infield single that allowed Michaels to score. Machado followed up with an RBI double before Jermaine White legged out a run-scoring infield hit that resulted in a Sacred Heart error and another run crossing the plate. Glancy capped off the frame with a two-run shot to deep left field.
The Johnnies would tack on four more runs in the home half of the sixth on the back of three straight run-producing singles from Machado, Cirelli and White. Glancy tallied his fourth RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to bring the Red Storm lead to 14-5.
Cirelli added another RBI base knock in the last of the seventh to give St. John's its second double-digit lead of the weekend.
Sanzio closed out the final two frames to give the Red Storm its second win in a row and its first series win of the 2022 campaign.
