Michaels notched the first cycle by a Johnnie since 2007
The Encinitas, Calif., native recorded the first cycle by a Red Storm hitter since Ryan Mahoney against LIU on April 17, 2007. The redshirt sophomore went 5-for-5 with a team-high five RBIs and three runs scored in another stellar effort at the plate. Michaels batted .857 (12-for-14) during the three-game series with three home runs, a triple, three doubles and 13 RBIs.
Tate Ballestero and Nick Cirelli each added a home run in the win over Sacred Heart. Ballesteros's blast was his first of the season, and Cirelli slugged his second of the campaign. Ballestero recorded his eighth multi-hit game in a 2-for-6 performance with an RBI and two runs scored, and Cirelli chipped in two hits in five at-bats with two RBIs and a run scored.
David Glancy extended his hitting streak to seven games and his extra-base hit streak to two games in a 2-for-4 outing with a run scored.
Jermaine White logged his second multi-RBI game of the season, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks and a run scored.
All nine Johnnies starters reached base at least once on Sunday afternoon.
Jude Zern earned the first win of his career in relief of Joe Joe Rodriguez. The Red Storm bullpen blanked the Pioneers over the final three frames with Vincent Bianchi, Oliver McCarthy, Jake Alfaro and Tim Cunningham combining for the scoreless effort.
For the first time in the series, St. John's (5-14) grabbed the first lead of the ballgame in the bottom half of the first. Glancy and Luke Orbon singled before Michaels stroked a base hit through the left side of the infield to plate the opening tally of the afternoon.
Sacred Heart (1-17) quickly tied the score in the next half-inning. With runners on first and second, Trevor Fagan hit a single to right field to even the ledger at one run apiece.
After a scoreless third inning, the Red Storm surged back in front in the fourth. After Michaels smashed a triple to right-center, Carlos Hidalgo followed up with a double to give the Johnnies a 2-1 edge. Two batters later, Cirelli doubled the St. John's advantage to 3-1 with a bullet single through the right side.
The Pioneers refused to go down without a fight, plating four runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead, 5-3.
The Red Storm would respond in the bottom of the fifth with some fireworks of its own, scoring four runs to take the lead back from Sacred Heart, 7-5. After Ballestero single and a Chris Conniff walk, Michaels doubled down the left field line for his second RBI of the game. After Colin Wetterau walked to load the bases, Austin Machado drew a run scoring base on balls. White capped off the inning with a two-run single to left-center.
SHU added a tally in the top of sixth to tighten the score, 7-6, but that was as close as the Pioneers would get.
St. John's extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to reach double digits for the third-straight game, 10-6. Ballestero led off the frame with a solo shot over the wall in left before Michaels completed the cycle with a two-run bomb down the left-field line.
After a scoreless frame by Bianchi in the top of seventh, Cirelli homered to center to start the inning before Conniff and Michaels added run-scoring singles in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach, 13-6, and secure the series sweep for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Tuesday, March 22 when it makes up its game with Hofstra in the first of two midweek games. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
