Attackman Jonathan Huber tallies seven points in losing effort
HANOVER, N.H.- The St. John's lacrosse team fell at RV Dartmouth, 17-10, on a cloudy Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field.
The Dartmouth offense generated 15 goals in the first three periods to move past the Red Storm (1-6). The Big Green's Colin McGill led all players with nine points (6 G, 3 A).
Jonathan Huber tied a career-high with seven points on the afternoon. The Great River, N.Y., native notched four goals and moved to 11th all-time in program history with 73 career goals.
Kaden Quirk hit double-figures in saves for the fourth consecutive contest. The freshman set a new season-high with 15 saves and added just the second goalie assist by a St. John's netminder since 2018.
Brian Kelly dished out three helpers on the afternoon to eclipse the 20-point mark on the year. Caleb Zuhoski fired in two shots and Matt Duncan added a goal for the second-straight outing.
Dartmouth (4-1) jumped out to the early lead with three goals over the first two minutes and 39 seconds. The Johnnies got on the board when Kelly slipped an inside pass to Huber for his 15th goal of the season and first of four on the afternoon. In the late moments of the first period, Jack Lutfi found Dylan Willis who touched a quick pass to Huber for a one-on-one with the goalie but Dartmouth's Daniel Hincks stopped the shot with his head.
In the second period, Dartmouth built itself some breathing room when it engineered a quick four-goal run to push its advantage to 9-2. Zuhoski brought the Big Green run to a halt when he put a feed from Willis into the twine. In the waning seconds of the first half, Quirk launched a long pass all the way into the Johnnies attacking zone to Huber, who scored as time expired.
In the third period, Dartmouth's prolific offense continued to keep St. John's at a distance. following a Quirk save and immediate Red Storm clear, Duncan dished the highlight behind-the-back pass to Huber for his third tally. Later in the period, long-stick defender, Jack McCarthy fired in a rocket to beat Hincks for his first-career goal on an assist from Kelly.
The Big Green opened the final quarter with two quick goals to push the lead to 17-7. The Johnnies delivered the last three goals of the afternoon courtesy of Lutfi, Duncan and Huber.
The Red Storm will have a quick turnaround as the team will travel to Fairfield for a Tuesday night contest inside Rafferty Stadium at 7 p.m.
