Leah Anderson collects her first win of the outdoor season
CORAL GABLES, Fla.- The St. John's track and field team put on another solid performance at the Hurricane Invitational on the campus of the University of Miami on Saturday afternoon.
"We had a good showing for the second meet of the outdoor season. We left the meet with new 4x100-meter and pole vault school records," said Head Coach Aliann Pompey. "We had high expectations for the group, and they really came through."
The 4x100-meter relay team of Leah Anderson, Brooklyn Chestnut, Skyy Diop and Tatyana McKenzie set a new program mark with a time of 45.50, beating the previous record by .14 seconds. The quartet finished in second behind Harvard.
After breaking the St. John's indoor program record in the pole vault, Meghan Ladd etched her name in the school's outdoor record book by clearing the 3.45-meter bar. Ladd surpasses her own mark of 3.27 meters set last year at BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Ladd finished in 11th place.
Anderson secured her first win of the outdoor campaign in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.07, the seventh best time in program history. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native also finished fifth in the 200-meters, crossing the finish line with 23.74 seconds on the clock which puts her in a tie for fourth on the St. John's all-time list in the event.
Diop finished in the top 10 in both events she competed in on Saturday. The senior out of Ontario captured fourth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.55 and 10th place in the 200-meters (24.35).
Like Diop, McKenzie also notched top-10 finishes in 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. The freshman grabbed ninth place in the 200-meters with a time of 24.22 and 10th place in the 400-meter dash (56.58).
Chestnut logged personal bests in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, finishing with times of 11.95 and 24.87, respectively, and Zamira Ysaac tallied a career-best time in the 100-meter hurdles (15.15). Ysaac also posted a strong sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Red Storm will be back in action next week when it travels to Princeton, N.J., to take part in the Sam Howell Invitational next Saturday.
