St. John’s to Host Creighton for BIG EAST Series

Red Storm and Bluejays to play one game on Thursday followed by Saturday doubleheader
QUEENS, N.Y.- After sweeping the season series with Hofstra with a 6-4 win on Tuesday, the St. John's baseball will return to the friendly confines of Jack Kaiser Stadium to take on BIG EAST opponent Creighton in a three-game set. Thursday's opener is set for 3 p.m., and the series will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader that starts at noon.
All three matchups will be live streamed on ESPN3, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Joe Joe Rodriguez will get the start on Thursday, and Brandon Backman will take the ball in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader. The starter for the series finale is to-be-determined.
Vincent Bianchi picked up his first win of the season on Tuesday, tossing 3.1 hitless relief innings against Hofstra to kickstart a streak of six consecutive scoreless frames for the Red Storm bullpen.
At the plate, all nine starters reached base at least once against the Pride while three different Johnnies recorded at least one RBI in the midweek win.
The team's leader in batting average, Tate Ballestero is currently hitting .350 with a squad-best .441 on-base percentage. The Morristown, N.J., native sits at second among position players with 18 walks and is one of three starters to boast double-digit extra-base hits with 12. Ballestero paces the Red Storm with 43 base hits and is one of two players to start every game in 2022.
Despite not starting against Hofstra, Kevin Michaels ranks second on the team in several offensive categories, including batting average (.343), slugging percentage (.537) and OPS (.942). The Encinitas, Calif., native is tied with Ballestero with 12 hits for extra bases. The redshirt sophomore leads the Red Storm with 30 RBIs and ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in RBIs per game, tallying 1.03 runs batted in per start.
A solid blend of offense and defense, Jackson Tucker is one of three primary starters with an on-base percentage of .400 or better, reaching at a .415 clip. The Staten Island native leads the team with 25 walks and draws an average of 0.86 free passes a game to rank second in the conference. The freshman outfielder has 11 steals to pace the Johnnies.
The team's leader in the power department, David Glancy has 14 extra-base hits, including a squad-high eight home runs. The redshirt sophomore boasts a .566 slugging percentage to lead all Red Storm hitters and is the only position player on the roster to reach the 30 runs scored mark. Glancy rounds out the batters with averages of .300 or better, hitting at a .317 clip. The Neptune, N.J., native joins Ballestero as the only other player to start all 33 games for the Johnnies this season.
Creighton enters this weekend's conference series with a record of 18-8 and BIG EAST mark of 3-0. The Bluejays took all three games from the Georgetown Hoyas by a combined score of 34-8.
Creighton joins Connecticut as the only teams with no losses in conference play.
