Colin Wetterau singled in the 10th to give the Red Storm the one-run victory
Colin Wetterau laced a single over the right fielder's head to score the game-winning run. David Glancy went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, including his ninth home run of the season, a game-tying solo shot with two outs in the ninth.
Paul Orbon continues to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Orbon is currently batting .375 in 16 games played.
Jackson Tucker and Chris Conniff each tallied an RBI in the series clincher with the former adding a run scored.
On the mound, Tim Cunningham picked up his first win of the season, tossing 2.2 innings with five strikeouts and one run allowed. Starter Brandon Backman threw 4.2 frames, striking out five Bulldogs in a no-decision for St. John's (15-24, 2-6 BIG EAST).
It was a pitcher's duel early as both starters kept the game scoreless through the initial four innings.
Butler (18-22, 2-6 BIG EAST) grabbed its first lead of the series in the top of the fifth, plating two runs to march in front, 2-0. Kollyn All got the frame started with a double to left center. Garret Gray and Nick Ortega drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. With two outs, Kyle Van Liere took ball four to bring All home and open the scoring. Gray doubled the Bulldogs' advantage, scoring on a wild pitch.
The Johnnies quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Orbon ripped a double past the diving third baseman to lead off the frame before reaching third on a productive Wetterau groundout. A wild pitch from Butler starter Corey Bosecker brought Orbon home and got the Red Storm on the board.
The Bulldogs answered back with authority in the visitor portion of the sixth, tacking on four runs to expand the lead, 6-1. A single, an error and a walk loaded the bases for Ortega with two outs, who drew the RBI base-on-balls to restore the multi-run edge and reload the bases. James Gargano delivered the big blow in the frame, hitting a triple to the alley in right center to empty the bases and widen the gap to five runs.
St. John's refused to go down without a fight and tied the game at six in the bottom of the seventh with five runs in the frame. Three straight batters reached base to open the inning, knocking Bosecker out of the game. Conniff lifted a sac fly to left to score a run and get the Johnnies within four, 6-2. Tucker followed up with an RBI single that was bobbled by the center fielder, allowing him to reach second and the runner on first to reach third base. With two runners in scoring position, Glancy made the most of the opportunity with a two-RBI base hit to center to bring St. John's within a run, 6-5. After advancing to third base on a failed pickoff attempt and a groundout to second, Glancy tied the game by scoring on a passed ball.
After a scoreless eighth, Butler inched ahead in the top of the ninth, 7-6. Travis Holt launched a solo home run over the wall in left to give the Bulldogs a late lead.
Glancy extended the afternoon with a solo round tripper of his own in the bottom of the ninth to send the contest to extra innings.
After Cunningham kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the top of the tenth, the Johnnies put together some two-out magic to walk it off, 8-7. Cirelli got the rally started with a single up the middle before drawing a walk to put a runner in scoring position. Wetterau capitalized on the chance and lifted a fly ball over the head of Ortega in right to send everybody in Queens home happy.
St. John's and Butler will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 12 noon.
