Johnnies scored three in the ninth to tie the game
Sunday's result was the first tie for the Johnnies against a BIG EAST opponent since 1999, when they played Boston College to a 4-4 deadlock.
The Red Storm's 12 runs came from a variety of sources, including Tate Ballestero, who tallied three RBIs with a double in a 2-for-5 day at the plate.
David Glancy, Colin Wetterau and Chris Conniff each recorded two RBIs and two runs scored in the offensive outburst. Conniff and Glancy tied for the team lead with three base hits.
Paul Orbon and Jackson Tucker accounted for the remaining RBIs, notching one apiece. Orbon drew three walks on Sunday while Tucker went 2-for-4 with a double.
All nine offensive starters reached base at least once, and two-thirds of the lineup tallied at least two base hits.
On the mound, Vincent Bianchi continued his recent string of solid outings, scattering four hits across 3.1 frames of one-run ball.
Butler (18-21-1, 2-6-1) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs to go up, 7-0. Back-to-back RBI singles followed by a sac fly gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 edge. A fielder's choice brought home another run before Nick Ortega capped off the frame with a three-run home run to left.
St. John's (15-24-1, 2-6-1) began chipping away at the deficit in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs to make the score 7-2. With two outs, Nick Cirelli hit a groundball up the middle for the first hit of the afternoon for the Johnnies. Orbon drew a four-pitch walk to set the table for Saturday's walk-off hero, Wetterau, who punched a base knock through the right side to send Cirelli home and get the Red Storm on the board. With Orbon on third, Conniff laced the first pitch of the at-bat to right to put up a crooked number in the frame.
The Johnnies added one in the third and another in the fourth to close the gap, 7-4. Orbon drew another free pass with the bases loaded in the third while Ballestero hit a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth to cut the deficit to three.
Butler responded to the home team's rally with another run in the top of the fifth off a sacrifice fly to expand the Bulldogs' advantage, 8-4.
The Red Storm answered back with authority in the home half of the fifth, scoring five times in the frame to pull ahead, 9-8. With runners on first and second and two outs, Conniff delivered another RBI single to left to get the rally started. After Tucker drew a walk to load the bases, Glancy stroked a base hit through the left side to send two runners to the plate and get the Johnnies within one, 8-7. Ballestero put St. John's in front with a booming double high off the wall in right to score two more.
After a relatively quiet sixth and seventh, Butler made more noise in the visitor portion of the eighth, regaining the lead with four tallies to tip the scales back in its favor, 12-9.
Like Saturday's walk-off win, the Red Storm refused to go down without a fight in the last of the ninth. Orbon got the comeback effort started by walking and advancing to second on a passed ball. Wetterau immediately took advantage of the chance and singled to left center to get the Johnnies within two, 12-10. After a Conniff base hit, Tucker came up clutch with a double down the right-field line to plate Wetterau and make it a one-run contest. Ballestero grounded into a double-play to score Conniff and tie the game. Tucker attempted to win the game by scampering home from third, but he was tagged out at the plate to end the inning.
After a discussion between the umpires and both managers, it was determined that the game could not continue, and the four-hour and one-minute slugfest ended in a tie.
The Red Storm will close out the eight-game homestand on Wednesday when it welcomes in the Iona Gaels for the first of two midweek meetings in 2022. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
