Johnnies claim their eighth straight home match on Tuesday
QUEENS N.Y.- The St. John's men's tennis team defeated Sacred Heart, 4-0, on Tuesday in an on-campus showdown.
The Red Storm (13-4) were able to come out on top in doubles play against the Pioneers. The Johnnies corralled two of the three matches in doubles to pull ahead one point, Vlad Vasilache and Carl Gustavsson swept their match 6-4. On the no. 3 court, Giuseppe De Camelis and Dylan Loru claimed victory in their match as well, 6-3.
In singles play, St. John's grabbed all three finished matches. In the no. 2 spot Gustavsson swept his match over Sacred Heart's Matyas Venci, 6-1, 6-2.
Yaron Guberman came out on top on the no. 3 court match. The freshman outlasted the Pineers Kevin Chao, 6-2, 6-0. De Camelis tallied the final point for the home side, as his match 6-2, 2-0 was deemed retired. The Trani, Italy native has taken six out of his last seven singles contests.
On the no. 5 and 6 courts, Felcher and Loru's matches were both declared unfinished.
After Tuesday afternoon's victory, St. John's has now moved past Sacred Heart in four of the last five seasons.
