Leah Anderson notched two second place finishes in the Sunshine State
The St. John's track and field team wrapped up competition at two meets on Saturday, participating in the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on the campus of the University of Miami and the Metropolitan Championships at Icahn Stadium.
"This weekend was our first real test of the outdoor season," said Director of Track and Field Aliann Pompey. "Our athletes all contested multiple events so we can see where our performance gaps are and what we need to keep an eye on come Big East weekend and beyond. We have a great shot at getting a number people into the NCAA this year."
Leah Anderson made her presence felt in Coral Gables, Fla., finishing second in the 200 and 400-meter dashes with times of 23.71 and 52.74, respectively, against some of the best athletes in the nation. Skyy Diop finished just behind Anderson in the 400-meters, posting a time of 53.77. The Ontario native also grabbed seventh place in the 200-meter dash (24.09). Tatyana McKenzie grabbed a top-10 finish in the 200-meters while Brooklyn Chestnut finished in 11th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.92.
The quartet of Anderson, Chestnut, Diop and McKenzie smashed the St. John's record in the 4x100-meter relay for the second time this season, combining for a blazing time of 45.14 and finishing in second place just behind a nationally ranked Oklahoma relay team.
The other portion of the squad competed against the best athletes in the tri-state area in the Metropolitan Championships at Icahn Stadium.
Esmeralda Reyes, who had two surgeries a year ago, grabbed her second win in as many meets in the javelin throw with a toss of 40.65 meters. Nina D'Amato secured third place with a throw of 36.74 meters.
Meghan Ladd surpassed her own program record in the pole vault, clearing the 3.50-meter bar and securing third place.
On the track, Zamira Ysaac continued her strong outdoor season, collecting fourth-place finishes in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.
Claire Cushing posted a solid time of 2:20.01 in the 800-meter run, good for seventh place. The 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams put on strong showings at Icahn Stadium, finishing third and fourth, respectively.
As a team, St. John's finished in fourth place with 78.5 points.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday, April 15 when it makes a second trip to Princeton, N.J., to take part in the Larry Ellis Invitational.
