Kevin Michaels went 5-for-6 with a home run on Sunday
For the second time this season, Kevin Michaels tallied five hits, going 5-for-6 on Sunday. The Encinitas, Calif., native hit his seventh home run of the season and notched two RBIs and three runs scored, including the game-winning tally in the 11th.
Paul Orbon recorded two RBIs with one of them being the walk-off RBI single in extra innings. Two other Johnnies, David Glancy and Carlos Hidalgo, logged two RBIs apiece in the series win over the Hoyas.
Eight of the starting nine reached base multiple times to bolster a stellar offensive effort for the Red Storm.
On the mound, Chuck Sanzio picked up his second win of the season, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings with a career-high six strikeouts.
Georgetown drew first blood on Sunday, scoring two in the top of the third to jump in front, 2-0. Two sacrifice flies by Jake Hyde and Cam Meyer, respectively, accounted for the opening tallies of the rubber match.
St. John's responded with four runs of its own in the home half of the third to tip to vault ahead, 4-2. After singles by Hidalgo and Tucker, Glancy brought both of them home with a scorching double to the gap in right center to tie the game at two. Ballestero followed up with an RBI base hit to give the Johnnies their first lead of the afternoon. Michaels kept the hit parade going with a run-scoring single that found the right-field turf to double the Red Storm's lead.
The Hoyas trimmed the deficit in half in the top of the fourth, 4-3, courtesy of a Christian Ficca solo home run to the visiting bullpen in right.
Georgetown played longball again in the visitor portion of the fifth when Cam Meyer launched a two-run shot to left to give the Hoyas the lead, 5-4.
The Red Storm tipped the scales in its favor in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run inning to lead, 8-5. Three straight batters reached base before Orbon drew ball four with the bases loaded to tie the game at five. Two batters later, Hidalgo stroked a two-run single to left to give the Johnnies their second lead of the afternoon, 7-5. Tucker tacked on another run in the frame with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Hoyas promptly tied the game at eight in the top of the seventh when Meyer hit a three-run homer to left for his second round tripper of the game.
Georgetown pushed another run across in the top of the eighth to regain the lead, 9-8. With a runner on third and one out, Andrew Ciufo lifted a sac fly to center to score the run and put the Hoyas in front heading to the ninth.
Down to its final strike in the bottom of the ninth, Michaels delivered a game-tying home run for the Red Storm that bounced off the left-field wall to send the game to extra innings.
Both teams held firm in the 10th to keep the score, 9-9.
In the bottom of the 11th, Michaels tallied his fifth of the day to start the Red Storm rally before a Cirelli single put him in scoring position with Orbon stepping to the plate. On a 1-1 pitch, Orbon blooped a single over the head of the shortstop to send everyone at Jack Kaiser Stadium home happy and clinch a crucial series win.
The Red Storm will end the regular season with a four-game road trip, starting with a short trip to Staten Island to take on Wagner. First pitch on Tuesday from SIUH Community Park is set for 3:30 p.m.
