After two scoreless innings, the Musketeers extended their lead with two runs to make the score 3-0 in the bottom of fourth. Two straight batters reached to start the frame before Andrew Walker singled to right and advanced to second on the throw to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the home team. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice groundout, Walker scored on a sacrifice fly to right field to extend the Musketeers' advantage to three runs.
Bell gave way to Lynch in the top of the fifth, who proceeded to retire 15 of the 16 batters he faced over the final five frames to secure the series-opening win for Xavier.
The Red Storm and Musketeers will resume the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Hayden Field is set for 1 p.m.
